“Tommy, there is something that we need to talk about.”  Adam told Tommy, his boyfriend one evening when he came home from the studio.

“What?”  Tommy inquired with concern.

Adam took Tommy hand and led him over to the couch.  They sat down and looked at one another.  They continued to hold hands.

“Adam, talk to me.  You’re freaking me out a little.”  Tommy spoke as he squeezed Adam’s hand.

“When we were broke up a few months ago for like two weeks, I did something really stupid.  I slept with some guy that I met at a club one night.  We were only together once, but…”  Adam started to say.

“Did you get something from him?  Some kind of disease or something?”  Tommy quizzed with hurt in his voice as he pulled his hand away.

“No.  It’s nothing like that.  I promise you.  I was tested and I’m clean.  We used protection.  I’m not that stupid.  It’s just that this guy can’t take a hint.  He’s been calling me and showing up at random places.  I think he’s following me or something.  He wants to hook up again.”  Adam explained as he reached for Tommy’s hand again.

“Why didn’t you tell me before that you’d slept with someone else when we were broken up?”  Tommy questioned quietly.

“I should have, but I was scared that you’d leave again if I told you.  Like I said, it was stupid mistake and I regret it very much.  I was drunk and sad and lonely…and none of that is an excuse, but I just want you to understand.  I would never have done that if we were together.”  Adam told him firmly.

“I forgive you.  I know that you aren’t a cheater…and I can’t blame you for hooking up with some random guy.  I left you and I told you that I wasn’t coming back.  I gave you every reason to believe that it was over between us.”  Tommy replied.

Suddenly, Adam’s cell phone started to ring.  He picked it up and looked at the screen.  Immediately, he dropped the phone again.

“Who is it?”  Tommy inquired.

“The weird stalker guy…Bennett”  Adam answered.

Tommy picked up the phone and answered the call.

“Listen, fucker, I want you to leave my boyfriend alone.  If you don’t stop bothering him, we’re going to the police.”  Tommy threatened.

“Boyfriend?  He wasn’t acting like he had a boyfriend when he was on his knees for me…when he was fucking me into the mattress.” Bennett responded smugly.

“Whatever the two of you did is over now.  Don’t fucking call him or follow him again!”  Tommy shouted.

“We’ll see if it’s over.”  Bennett replied before disconnecting the call.

“That guy is seriously fucked in the head.  I think we should talk to your lawyer…Maybe we can get a restraining order or something.”  Tommy told Adam.

“I’m just glad to know that I’m not the only one who thinks he’s crazy.”  Adam responded in relief.

The following day, Adam and Tommy met with the lawyer.  He was sympathetic to their situation, but told them that there was nothing to do at the point in time.  Bennett hadn’t made any threats or done any harm.  Even if he was harassing and stalking Adam, that would be hard to prove.  The police were unlikely to do anything.  He advised them to change their security codes at home, hire more bodyguards for when Adam went out, and change Adam’s cell phone number.

Adam and Tommy took the lawyer’s advice.  They felt better.  They didn’t hear from Bennett or see him anywhere.  They hoped that he had finally gotten the hint.

“Hello.”  Tommy said as he answered his cell phone a few days later.

“I guess you must have talked to a lawyer.  He told you that there was nothing the police could do because I hadn’t broken any laws.  He advised Adam to change his number and probably the security codes for the house…and to add more guards.”  Bennett told him.

“How did you know all that?”  Tommy inquired.

“Well, if Adam would have been more interested in me and not just what is between my legs, he would have known that I’m a law student.  I’ve been very careful not to break any laws.”  Bennett explained.

“You’re a crazy fucker.  You stay away from Adam and me and just everyone, okay?  You leave us alone or I promise you’ll regret it.”  Tommy swore.

Tommy got no response from Bennett.  He had hung up on him.

Adam was upset about Tommy’s phone call from Bennett.  They changed everything again including Tommy’s phone number.  They added even more guards.

Several weeks went by with no contact from Bennett.  Adam and Tommy felt safe again.  They began to let their guard down a little.

A few months later, Adam and Tommy had almost completely forgotten about Bennett.  They were still cautious when they were out, but they didn’t let it control their lives.

When gay marriage was legalized in all fifty states, Adam and Tommy went to Vegas and got married.  They took their friends and family with them for a long weekend.  By the time they returned to L.A., news of their Vegas nuptials had spread like wildfire.  Every major media outlet wanted the exclusive story from the newlyweds.

After a lot of discussion, Adam and Tommy decided to give Ellen Degeneres the first interview.  Ellen had always supported Adam’s career.  They had become friends over the years.  They knew that she would be supportive of their marriage and respectful of their privacy.

When Adam and Tommy returned home from the Ellen taping, they felt very happy.  Ellen and her audience had been wonderful.  They were so wrapped up in their happiness that they didn’t notice when the alarm to the house wasn’t set.

“How could you do this to me?!”  Bennett shouted as Adam and Tommy walked into their living room.

Adam and Tommy stopped dead in their tracks when they saw him standing there with a gun.  He was pointing the weapon at them. Bennett was angry and crying.  He’d obviously cracked.

“How could you marry him?”  Bennett inquired bitterly.  He shook the gun in their direction.

Without thinking of his own well being, Tommy stepped in front of Adam.  Adam was too shocked and scared to do anything.

“I loved you, Adam.  We could have been happy together.  Why would you want to be with him?  He’s not even gay.”  Bennett spat.

“You need to get the hell out of here!”  Tommy shouted.

“You need to shut the fuck up!  You don’t deserve him!”  Bennett screamed as he took a few steps closer.

“You should go.  The police will be here any minute.”  Adam spoke quietly as he moved out from behind Tommy slightly.

Bennett aimed the gun at Adam.  Before anyone could say anything else, he pulled the trigger.  Tommy heard Adam scream and fall to the floor.  Automatically, Tommy rushed forward.  He caught Bennett by surprise.  They tumbled to the floor.  Tommy got his hands on the gun.  They wrestled for it.  The gun went off with a loud bang.

Tommy scrambled to his knees.  Bennett had shot himself in the stomach.  He was bleeding to death.  He dropped the gun on the floor.  Tommy pushed it away from him.

Quickly, Tommy turned around.  Adam was lying on the floor.  The carpet was stained red all around him.  Tommy rushed to his side.

“I’m right here, baby.  You’re gonna be okay.”  Tommy spoke reassuringly as he knelt next to Adam.

Adam’s eyes fluttered open.  He looked right at Tommy.  With one hand, Tommy fumbled his cell phone out of his pocket.  With the other hand, he applied pressure to the gun shot wound on Adam’s shoulder/upper chest.  He tried to stay calm as he dialed 911 and explained to the dispatcher what had happened.  Once they had all the information, Tommy threw his phone down and used both hands to apply pressure to the wound.  Adam was losing a lot of blood.  His breathing was ragged.  He couldn’t keep his eyes open and focused.

“Adam, baby, look at me.  Stay with me, okay?  The paramedics are on their way.  You’re gonna be fine.  I love you.”  Tommy declared before leaning down to kiss Adam’s lips.

A few minutes later, the paramedics rushed in.  There was nothing to do for Bennett.  He was already dead.  They quickly started to work on Adam.  They needed to stabilize him enough to transport to the hospital.  The police also arrived.  They asked Tommy a lot of questions.  He tried to focus and answer them, but he just wanted to make sure that Adam was okay.

At some point during all the chaos, Neil, Eber, and Leila arrived at the house.  Tommy had forgotten that they were supposed to be coming over for dinner.

“This is my son’s house!”  Leila shrieked at a police officer who was trying to stop them from coming into the house.

“Tommy!  Tommy!  What the hell happened?”  Neil asked as he pushed pass the police and rushed over to Tommy.

“Adam…Adam’s been shot.”  Tommy stammered as he looked at Neil with tears in his eyes.

“My God!  Fuck!  Is he okay?”  Neil inquired as he reached out and touched Tommy’s shoulder.

“I…I…I …don’t know.  He lost a…a… lot of b…blood.  The paramedics are…are…uh…working on him.”  Tommy stuttered.

“Are you okay?”  Neil questioned looking Tommy up and down.

“It’s not my blood.”  Tommy whispered as he looked down at himself.  He looked like an extra from some horror movie.

The police officers finally let Leila and Eber through.  They rushed over to Tommy and Neil.  They had already heard what Tommy said about Adam.

A few minutes later, Adam was rushed to the hospital.  He had to undergo emergency surgery to repair the damage the bullet had caused.  He also had to have a blood transfusion to replace all that he had lost.

During the next 48 hours, Adam slipped in and out of consciousness.  Tommy sat by his side the entire time.  He wouldn’t go anywhere.  While Adam had been in surgery, Tommy had gotten cleaned up and changed his clothes.  During most of the vigil, Leila was also at her son’s side.  Eber and Neil took turns sitting with them and getting them food and drinks.

Tommy just wanted Adam to wake up so that he would know he was okay.  The doctors were hopeful about his recovery.  Technically, he had been dead for a few minutes during the surgery.  However, they didn’t think that it was long enough to cause any permanent brain damage.  He had no head trauma from the fall after the gun shot.  The doctors explained that sometimes after a trauma, the body shut down for awhile.  They saw no reason to be alarmed that Adam had been unconscious for two days.  His vitals were normal.

As the three day mark neared, Tommy found himself alone with Adam for the first time in days.  Neil and Eber had finally been able to convince Leila to go with them to get something to eat.  They had tried to get Tommy to go along with them, but he refused.  He told them that there was no way he was leaving until Adam woke up.

Tommy was sitting in the chair beside the bed.  He was holding Adam’s hand and dozing off a little.  He hadn’t slept very well since the shooting.  Just as he was drifting off to sleep, Tommy felt Adam’s hand move in his hand.  He sat up straight, fully awake, and looked at Adam’s face.  He saw nothing…no indication that he was waking up.  He stared at him for a few moments.  He felt his hand move again.

“Adam, I’m here, baby.  I’m right here.  Can you open your eyes for me?”  Tommy asked quietly as he moved and sat on the bed.

Adam’s hand twitched in his again, but nothing else happened.  A few tears slid down Tommy’s face.  He bent down and lightly kissed Adam.

“Please wake up, Adam.”  Tommy pleaded as a few more tears escaped his eyes.

Adam groaned and his eyes fluttered open.  He quickly shut them again.  He blinked a few times before fully opening his eyes again.

“Tommy.”  Adam rasped.  His throat was extremely dry.

“I’m right here, Adam.  I’m so glad that you’re awake.  We’ve been so worried about you.”  Tommy stated as he gently brushed some of Adam’s hair out of his face.

“Are you okay?  Did they arrest Bennett?”  Adam inquired in a hushed voice.

“I’m fine.  Good now that you’re awake.  They didn’t arrest Bennett.  He shot himself after he shot you.  He died before the paramedics got there.”  Tommy explained.

“I don’t want to ever go back to that house.”  Adam whispered as tears formed in his eyes.

“You don’t have to, baby.”  Tommy assured him as he leaned down and kissed his cheek.

“How long have I been out?”  Adam asked a few minutes later.  The fog in his head was starting to clear.

“Almost three days.  You lost a lot of blood.  You’ve had two transfusions.  You had emergency surgery to repair the damage the bullet caused.  The doctors say that you are going to need physical therapy once your shoulder heals.  There was some nerve damage, so your left arm might never be the same.  You might not regain sensation in it or have the range of motion that you used to, but you’re alive and that’s all that I care about right now.”  Tommy told him as he held his right hand.

Adam only nodded his head that he understood what Tommy was telling him.  He began to cry.  Tommy took him in his arms as carefully as he could.  He held him as he sobbed.  He was glad to be alive, but sad that one stupid mistake had caused all of this.

A few days later, Adam was released from the hospital.  Tommy and Adam went to stay with Leila for awhile.  Adam had no intention of ever stepping foot in that house again.  He didn’t want to see the blood stains on the carpet and remember what had happened there.  He didn’t want to remember the pain.  He didn’t want to be in there knowing that Bennett had died there…knowing that he had almost died there.  Tommy didn’t want to go back either, but he did.  He and Neil went and retrieved his and Adam’s personal belongings.

The first few weeks after the shooting were hard.  Adam was struggling with his injury.  He wasn’t recovering like he hoped he would.  He could barely move his left arm and he had very little feeling in it.  He couldn’t tell the difference between hot and cold or the differences in the amount or pressure being applied.  The doctors were still hopeful that with therapy the sensations would come back.  Adam wasn’t so sure.

Adam was also having a hard time dealing with the emotional consequences of the shooting.  He had nightmares almost every night.  He felt guilty that he had caused it by sleeping with Bennett.  Tommy finally convinced him to see a therapist.  She was really helping him deal with everything.  Tommy was glad that Leila was around.  There were times when he just didn’t know what to do anymore.  She was there to listen. Give advice, and sometimes just hug him when he needed it.

Before the shooting, Adam and Tommy had been looking for a new house.  They wanted something that they both had picked out.  They had looked at a few places, but hadn’t decided on anything.  A few times, Tommy tried to get Adam to go with him to look at some other places.  Adam never wanted to.  Tommy knew that they couldn’t stay with Leila forever.

Almost two months after the shooting, Tommy surprised Adam when he pulled up in front of a house.  They were on their way back from a therapy session.  It had gone okay, but Adam was still having trouble moving his arm.  He was a little depressed.  He didn’t know why they were stopping at the house.  He remembered that he and Tommy had looked at it before the shooting when they were house hunting.  He had loved it, but Tommy wasn’t convinced.

“What are we doing here?”  Adam asked as he got out of the car.

Tommy smiled at him and slid his arm around his waist.  He looked up at the house.  It was big and beautiful.  It was perfect.

“This is our house.”  Tommy declared with a bright smile at Adam.

“What?”  Adam inquired in confusion.

“I know how much you loved this place when we looked at it months ago.  I was shocked that it was still on the market, but when it was I just knew that I had to buy it.  So it’s ours now.  I signed the final papers yesterday.  We can move in right away.”  Tommy explained as he hugged him.

“You bought this house for me?  But I thought you weren’t really sure about it.”  Adam responded in amazement.

“You love this place and it makes you happy.  I want you to be happy.”  Tommy told him.

“I want you to be happy too.”  Adam replied.

“As long as I’m with you, I’m happy.  Let’s go inside.’  Tommy stated as he dangled the keys in front of Adam.

Adam smiled as he followed Tommy to the door.  Quickly, he unlocked it and they went inside.  It was exactly like Adam remembered.  He smiled as he looked around.

“So what do you think?  Does it feel like home?”  Tommy quizzed.

“Yeah, it does.”  Adam whispered as he pulled Tommy into a hug.  “I love you.”

“I love you too.”  Tommy responded as he leaned up and kissed Adam’s lips.

Adam and Tommy stood in their empty living room and kissed for several long minutes.  When they broke the kiss, Adam kept Tommy close to him.

“It feels like home to me too.”  Tommy breathed as he relaxed into Adam’s arms.
