“What are you watching? Adam inquired as he entered the dressing room.
Tommy had his computer on his lap. Adam could hear sound coming from it, so he assumed he was watching something.
“A video that some girl sent me of her singing. Check it out.” Tommy replied motioning Adam over.
Adam took a seat beside Tommy. The bassist adjusted the computer so they could both see it. He started the video over.
A young girl, probably in her early twenties, appeared onscreen. She had bleach blonde hair and wore dark make-up on her eyes and lips. She was wearing a Hello Kitty t-shirt and skinny jeans. She reminded Adam of a female version of Tommy. Suddenly music started. She began to sing Paparazzi by Lady GaGa.
“She’s not Lady GaGa, but she’s good.” Adam stated nonchalantly.
“Yeah.” Tommy agreed half-heartedly. He thought she was okay, but he was getting some freaky vibes from her.
“She looks a little familiar. Who is she?” Adam questioned as he looked closer at the girl.
“Her name is Amy. I guess she’s been to a bunch of the shows already. I remember seeing her in D.C.” Tommy explained as the video ended and he closed his laptop.
“Why did she send you a video of herself singing?” Adam wondered out loud.
“I have no idea. I guess she’s a fan. She follows me on Twitter…maybe she wants to be discovered and thought I could help her with all my connections.” Tommy told him with a laugh. He had no connections except for Adam.
“Maybe.” Adam spoke with a laugh of his own.
Adam and Tommy got ready for the show. They didn’t give the video or Amy another thought.
On the way to the buses that night, Tommy came face to face with Amy. He didn’t admit it, but the girl was starting to freak him out more and more.
“Did you get my video?” Amy asked when Tommy stopped in front of her.
“Um, yeah. You were…good.” Tommy told her with a fake smile. He really didn’t want to encourage her behavior.
“Thanks. I’m really glad you liked it.” Amy replied with a bright smile.
“Can I sign something for you?” Tommy inquired a little impatiently. She was holding the whole process up.
“Yeah.” Amy responded as she produced a picture of him.
Quickly, Tommy scrawled his name.
“You’re the girl from the video, aren’t you?” Adam questioned as he joined them. He easily slipped his arm around Tommy.
“You showed him the video?” Amy asked Tommy. She tried to hide her anger and disgust, but a little slipped out when she said him and glared at Adam.
“Adam came in the room while I was watching it.” Tommy told her like he had to explain anything to her.
“You were good.” Adam declared with a smile at her.
“Thanks.” Amy stated without much enthusiasm. “I should go.”
Before either of them could say anything, Amy turned around and disappeared into the crowd. The two men pushed her out of their minds and continued to sign autographs and pose for pictures.
Over the next several weeks, Tommy continued to get random videos from Amy. In some of them, she was singing. In others, she was playing the guitar or the piano. She wasn’t very good at either. Tommy began to notice that she was only playing and/or singing songs by musicians that he had mentioned being a fan of in interviews.
When Tommy’s father passed away, Amy sent him a sympathy card. It didn’t make him feel any better. It only made him more concerned about her. He didn’t want anything from her, so he burned the card. That didn’t make him feel any better either.
Tommy tried not to let the girl upset him. She was just a fan…maybe she was a little overzealous, but he figured she was harmless. He wanted to talk to Adam about it, but he had already burdened him so much with his family issues. He didn’t want to bother him about something else.
Dearest Tommy,
I just got back to my room. I was at the show tonight at the St. Jean Balloon Festival. I wanted to let you know that I’m not mad at you for kissing Adam. I know that you only do it because he’s your boss and his fans like it.
I’m enclosing a picture of my new tattoo. I hope you like it.
Love,
Amy
Tommy stared at the piece of paper and the picture. Amy had gotten a tattoo of the rose from the Violator album by Depeche Mode. Beside the rose was what appeared to be his signature. He was too shocked to do anything but stare open mouthed.
“What’s wrong, baby?” Adam inquired as he entered their room.
They’d been together since Tommy had first found out about his father. Adam had been really supportive and Tommy had realized that he was in love with him. Tommy couldn’t even begin to explain, so he handed the letter and photo to his boyfriend.
Adam took it from him. Quickly, he read it and looked at the picture. He felt like he was going to be sick. This Amy girl was obviously a little mentally imbalanced.
“Tommy, are you okay?” Adam inquired as he sat beside him and gently touched his back.
“I knew she was a fan. She’s been sending me messages and videos for weeks now, but I had no idea that she was…” Tommy muttered and stopped trying to find the right word.
“Crazy.” Adam supplied.
“I just…I’m a little freaked out.” Tommy admitted.
“Come here, baby.” Adam spoke as he pulled Tommy into his arms.
Tommy melted right into Adam’s embrace. He loved being in his lover’s arms. It made him feel safe, protected, and loved. Slowly, a few tears started to fall from Tommy’s eyes. He tried to stop them, but they only came faster. Adam squeezed him tighter and dropped kisses on his head. He whispered soothing words.
“Everything’s gonna be okay, Tommy. I promise, baby. I’m gonna talk to security about this Amy person. I’m not gonna let anything happen to you.” Adam assured as he ran his fingers through Tommy’s hair.
True to his word, Adam had a long meeting with security, the band, the dancers, and pretty much everyone. He told them about Amy and ho she’d gone a little off the deep end. He wanted to make sure that she didn’t get anywhere near Tommy. Neil wanted to go to the cops, but Adam talked him out of it. She hadn’t done anything yet. The cops wouldn’t be able to do anything about it.
Adam thought that it had worked. They didn’t see the girl at any more shows. For a few weeks, Tommy didn’t receive any messages from her. They started to feel better…maybe she had come to her senses and backed off.
They were in Florida when the letters and videos started showing up again. Every time Tommy would see one from her, he would start shaking. It got to the point where Adam opened all his mail for him. He stopped using his computer. He didn’t want anything to do with her. However, she still hadn’t done anything threatening or illegal. The cops would still be unable to help.
While they were overseas, the letters stopped reaching Tommy. He figured that they were piling up somewhere back home, but he was glad that he didn’t have to worry about them.
When the tour was over and they were finally home, Tommy had managed to put Amy completely out of his mind. Adam wanted him to move in with him. Things were good between them, but Tommy told him that he wanted to think about it. Adam understood. They still saw each other as much as possible and most nights Tommy slept over. Tommy didn’t know why he didn’t just move in, but he’d never lived with a partner before and he was a little scared.
Everything was going so well for Tommy that he didn’t even think twice when he received the large manila envelope in the mail. He opened it and immediately dropped the contents on the floor with a gasp.
There were several large pictures and a letter. The pictures were of him and Adam out and about in L.A. Since they’d been back home, they hadn’t been hiding their relationship. He wasn’t too shocked by the pictures themselves. They weren’t of anything that paparazzi didn’t take pictures of. However, these pictures had stuff drawn all over them with red marker. Most of the damage had been done to Adam in these pictures.
Tommy took a few deep breaths and bent down to pick up the pictures and the letter. He threw the pictures face down on the table so that he wouldn’t have to look at them anymore. With shaking hands, he held the letter up so he could read it. He really didn’t want to, but he had to know what it said.
Dearest Tommy,
How could you do this to me? I thought that we had something special. I understood that you and Adam kissed onstage as part of the act, but this is going too far. You stay away from him. If you swear to stay away from him, I’ll forgive you. We can forget all about this. We can have a good life together.
Love,
Amy
Tommy dropped the letter to the floor and rushed into the bathroom. He got there just in time for his lunch to come back up. Amy was seriously crazy.
“Baby, you are coming to stay with me. No arguments. This chick is crazy. I don’t want you alone right now.” Adam declared when he arrived at Tommy’s place a little while later.
Once Tommy had been done being sick, he had called Adam. He didn’t know what else to do. Part of him called to make sure that Adam was okay. He had a feeling that Amy would hurt him if she had the chance.
“I’ll pack my things.” Tommy responded as he headed for his bedroom.
Tommy had no intention of arguing with Adam. He wanted to be with Adam. He wanted to make sure that he was okay just as much as the singer wanted to protect him.
Quickly, Tommy threw his clothes into his suitcase. He’d gotten pretty good at packing quickly during the tour. Ten minutes later, they were on their way to Adam’s house. Adam had the letter and the photos. He was going to talk to his lawyer and see what could be done about Amy.
The following day, Adam and Tommy met with the lawyer. He told them that Amy still hadn’t done anything illegal. She hadn’t made any direct threats. The pictures were terrible, but not enough to get an arrest and a conviction. The most that they could hope for was having her arrested for harassment, but the lawyer didn’t feel that those charges would stick either.
“The best that I can do right now is to try and arrange a meeting with Amy. If I speak to her, maybe she’ll back off.” The lawyer told the two men.
“I don’t care what you have to do…Talk to her…Offer her money…Just get her to leave Tommy alone.” Adam told him forcefully.
The lawyer nodded his head in acknowledgment. He truly felt bad for Adam and Tommy. He dealt with a lot of celebrities. He knew that the hardest thing for them to prove was stalking.
The lawyer kept his word. He attempted to contact Amy and set up a meeting with her. She refused to meet with him. However, the letters and the pictures stopped. They figured that the lawyer contacting her had been enough for Amy to stay away.
For the next few months, Adam and Tommy were very busy. They were working on a new album. Adam had decided to bring the whole band into the studio with him for the second album. They spent a lot of time writing and recording new songs. When they weren’t working on the album, Adam and Tommy were adjusting to living together. Slowly, they began to let their guard down when they had no further contact with Amy. They had even started to joke about it a little. Adam couldn’t believe that Tommy had a stalker before him. He was the big shot rock star after all.
It was the week after Easter. The album was almost done. Adam and Tommy had talked about going on a vacation when it was finished before the craziness of promo started. Tommy decided to spend the weekend with his mother. He had missed Easter dinner with her and the rest of the family. He felt a little bad about it. Adam was going to go with him, but he still had some work to do in the studio. It was the first time in a long time that they would be spending that much time away from one another.
Tommy called Adam Saturday night as he was getting ready for bed. The singer didn’t answer his cell phone. He called the house. He didn’t answer there either. Tommy didn’t think that he’d still be at the studio. He also didn’t think that Adam had gone out anywhere with anyone. He would have called or texted him first. He was a little worried. He decided to give it some time though. Maybe he was in the shower or driving.
By the time that two hours had passed with no response from Adam, Tommy was very worried. He paced around his mother’s kitchen. He had tried Adam’s cell and the house phone several more times. He had even called Monte. The guitarist hadn’t heard from Adam, but told him that he would let him know if he did. Tommy couldn’t take it anymore. He had to go home. He had to find Adam.
“Mom.” Tommy spoke as he gently shook her.
“What is it?” His mother asked as she opened her eyes and sat up.
“I have to go.” Tommy told her quickly.
“What’s wrong?” She asked her son.
“I’m not sure. I’ve been trying to get a hold of Adam for a few hours. He’s not answering anywhere. It’s not like him. I’m worried about him.” Tommy explained.
“Alright. Be careful. Call me if you need anything.” She declared as she hugged and kissed her son.
As Tommy made his way to their house, he felt like he couldn’t go fast enough. He was going well over the speed limit. Luckily, he didn’t get pulled over or into any accidents. Most of the way home, he kept imagining the worst possible things that could have happened to his boyfriend.
When he finally pulled into the driveway, Tommy sighed in relief. Adam’s car was parked out front. He was home. At least he hadn’t been in some horrific car accident. Most of the lights were off in the house. It looked like there was a light on in the living room. Tommy fumbled with his keys and entered the house. He turned to enter the security code in the alarm system, but discovered that it was already disarmed. Tommy immediately became concerned again. Adam always remembered to set the security system.
“Adam! Adam! Where are you?” Tommy shouted as he headed further into the house.
As he got nearer to the living room, Tommy heard some muffled noises. He quickened his pace. As he entered the room, he saw Adam tied to one of the dining room chairs. He was gagged. He saw Tommy and tried to yell for him to be careful, but it was useless with the gag.
When Tommy saw Adam like that, he gasped and headed right for him. He looked so upset and scared. He could see that he had been crying and fighting against the restraints.
“Don’t go any closer to him!” A female voice shouted when Tommy was just steps from him.
Tommy stopped when he heard the unmistakable sound of a gun being cocked. He met Adam’s eyes. He was begging Tommy with his eyes not to do something stupid.
“I warned you to stay away from him. I told you that we could have a good life together. Why would you want to be with him? It’s a sin.” Amy stated as she stepped in front of Tommy.
Tommy was near tears. He had thought that they were done with her. He couldn’t believe that she was here.
“How did you get in here?” Tommy asked.
“I have my ways.” Amy replied with a smirk.
“Let him go.” Tommy spoke quietly.
“You know I can’t do that.” Amy replied.
Amy walked behind Adam and gently ran the gun along his cheek. Adam flinched and closed his eyes.
“What do you want? I’ll do anything. Just don’t hurt him.” Tommy pleaded.
“Go sit on the couch.” Amy demanded as she gestured to the couch with her gun.
Tommy did as he was told. When he was seated on the couch, Amy walked over to him. She placed the gun on the coffee table and straddled his lap. She began to kiss all over his face and his neck. Her hands roamed his body. He fought her.
“Come on, Tommy. We’re gonna give Adam a little show. Show him the way that it’s supposed to be done.” Amy whispered before placing her lips on his lips.
Tommy kissed her back. He wanted to vomit, but he had to distract her. While she was kissing him, he grabbed her arms as hard as he could. With all the strength that he had, he threw her off his lap. She landed on the floor and hit her head on the coffee table. Tommy quickly jumped up from the couch and ran toward Adam. He had to get him untied so they could get out of there. He thought that Amy was unconscious.
Tommy was almost to Adam when he heard the gunshot. He gasped and looked into Adam’s shocked eyes. He saw red on Adam’s shirt. That bitch shot Adam, Tommy thought as he fell to the ground. Just before everything went black, he heard the police entering the room. They were telling Amy to drop her weapon. Fuck, it took them long enough to respond to the panic call, Tommy thought as he lost consciousness.
Slowly, Tommy blinked his eyes opened. It was bright. He didn’t know where he was. He tried to talk, but his throat was too dry. He tried to move, but he felt like every limb weighed about a million pounds. As he became more aware, he realized that he had tubes and wires attached to him. I must be in the hospital, he concluded. He tried to move again. He had to find Adam. He had to make sure that he was okay.
“Oh God, baby, you’re awake.” Adam declared as he rushed into the room and saw Tommy trying to move.
In a flash, Adam was at his side. He took his hand and squeezed it. He brought it up to his lips and gently kissed it.
“I’ve been so worried about you. I love you so much, Tommy.” Adam stated as he continued to hold Tommy’s hand. He reached over with his other hand and carefully moved a strand of hair.
“How are you okay? I saw the blood on your shirt. She shot you.” Tommy muttered with confusion.
“No, baby, she shot you. You saw…You saw your blood on my shirt.” Adam explained with tears in his eyes.
“Oh.” Tommy replied as he tried to remember.
“I thought we were both dead when she pulled that trigger. What made you hit the panic button when you came in the house?” Adam questioned.
“I, uh, I knew something was wrong. I had tried to call you like a million times and you didn’t answer or call me back. When I got home and your car was in the driveway, I was relieved, but then the alarm wasn’t set. I just knew that something was wrong.” Tommy answered.
“I’m just glad that you’re awake. You lost a lot of blood and had a collapsed lung. You’ve been unconscious for about three days.” Adam told him.
“What happened to her? Did they arrest her?” Tommy quizzed.
“They didn’t get the chance to. She turned the gun on herself when the police barged in. She’s dead.” Adam responded.
“Fuck! This is all so messed up.” Tommy whispered as he leaned back and closed his eyes.
“I know, baby. I know, but we’re both alive and that’s what is important. She was a very disturbed individual. I’m sorry that she killed herself, but I’m so happy that she didn’t kill you.” Adam told him before leaning down and lightly kissing his lips.
“How did she get in the house? How did she get you tied up like that? You’re nearly twice her size.” Tommy inquired.
“She bribed someone at the security company to give her the codes to get in the house. She was waiting when I got home. I didn’t know she was there. She hit me from behind and knocked me out. I have no idea how she managed to get me in the chair by herself.” Adam explained.
“I’m so sorry.” Tommy whispered as a few tears slid down his face.
“You have absolutely nothing to be sorry for, baby. None of this was your fault.” Adam soothed as he ran his fingers through Tommy’s hair.
“I know you’re right, but…” Tommy started to say.
“But nothing. I’m fine. You’re awake. We’re gonna be okay. We’ll get through this together.” Adam assured him as he squeezed his hand.
“I love you, Adam.” Tommy declared.
“I love you too, Tommy.” Adam replied as he leaned down to kiss his boyfriend.
