“Adam, are you okay?” Tommy inquired as he knocked on the singer’s dressing room door before entering the room.
Everyone was concerned about Adam. He had been acting upset and distracted all day. The show had gone okay, but he wasn’t as on as he usually was. Tommy had finally decided to talk to him.
Adam was sitting at the vanity removing his make-up. Tommy could see the sadness in his face. The two men locked eyes in the mirror. The singer tried to smile, but it was a weak attempt.
“What’s wrong?” Tommy asked as he shut the door and walked over to the singer.
“I’ve been thinking about those kids.” Adam replied simply.
Tommy only nodded his head and took a seat beside Adam. He knew that he was talking about the recent string of young gay kids that had committed suicide. He watched as Adam tried with shaking hands to wipe away the make-up. He reached over to take the wipe from the singer.
“Let me.” Tommy whispered.
Adam sighed and turned to face the bassist. Gently, Tommy began to wipe the other man’s face. He could see that Adam was near tears.
“Talk to me, babyboy.” Tommy demanded softly.
“I remember what it was like growing up…not being comfortable in my own skin. I felt like I didn’t fit in…that I’d never fit in. I hated my red hair and my freckles. I hated that I was a little overweight. And when I realized that I didn’t like girls and that I liked boys, I felt even more alone. I knew it wasn’t what other people thought was normal…that some people thought that it was sin, but it was just how I felt. I couldn’t change it. I felt hopeless and alone. I don’t think that I ever really contemplated suicide…not seriously anyway. I might have thought of it in passing like most teenagers I guess, but I was lucky enough to have parents that understood…and friends that were supportive and different too.” Adam told Tommy as tears slide down his face.
Tommy continued to remove Adam’s make-up as he talked. The bassist knew that Adam just needed someone to listen to him, so he did. When he had removed the last of the make-up, he took Adam’s hand in his as the singer continued to talk.
“I’ve been saying that it’s about the music and not my sexual orientation. I didn’t want to be the poster boy for gay rights, but as someone in the spotlight, maybe I have a responsibility to others. Maybe it’s not enough to be who I am and to show that I’m proud of everything that I am. Maybe I need to speak out. Maybe that’s why I was given this opportunity. Have I completely lost my mind?” Adam asked finally finishing his diatribe.
“You haven’t lost your mind, Adam. And I don’t think that you need to become the poster boy, but there’s no reason that you can’t use your voice to speak out for gay rights. I know that this might sound cheesy, but I think that you could change the world…Because you changed mine.” Tommy told his friend as he squeezed his hand and looked directly into his eyes.
“What are you talking about?” Adam inquired shyly.
“Ever since I’ve known you, you’ve made me want to be a better person…to be prouder of who I am and embrace my differences.” Tommy explained moving closer to the singer.
“I think that you give me too much credit.” Adam stated as he looked away from Tommy.
“No. I don’t give you enough credit.” Tommy responded taking Adam’s chin in his hand and making him look at him.
“Tommy.” Adam breathed as new tears formed in the corner of his eyes.
Tommy smiled slightly and closed the gap between them. Softly, he pressed his lips to Adam’s lips. The blonde ran his tongue along the dark haired man’s lips asking for entrance. Adam sighed and allowed Tommy to slip his tongue into his mouth. The bassist’s hand moved to the back of the singer’s neck and pressed them closer together.
“Tommy, what are you doing? You don’t want this. You don’t want me.” Adam spoke sadly when he broke away from the kiss.
“You’re wrong, Adam. I want you. We can show them that we’re proud of who we are. We can show them that it gets better…that life will be hard but you can find happiness in it. You can find a place where you belong. We can give them an example of a happy in love couple.” Tommy explained holding Adam’s hands in his.
“Love?” Adam breathed.
“Yeah, love. I’m so in love with you.” Tommy declared as he cupped Adam’s face in his hands.
Tommy looked into Adam’s eyes. He wanted him to know that he meant it with everything in him. Gently, he wiped the tears from Adam’s face with his thumbs. He brought their lips together again. Immediately, Adam opened his mouth for Tommy. The singer placed his hands on Tommy’s hips as the kiss deepened.
“I love you too, glitterbaby.” Adam whispered when the kiss ended and they rested their foreheads against one another.
“Let’s go change the world then, babyboy.” Tommy stated taking Adam’s hand and standing up.
Adam smiled and stood up. He leaned over and lightly kissed Tommy’s cheek. He really felt like together they could change the world. He’d never been prouder of being who he was then with the bassist at his side.
