Adam thought that they would have more time. They were supposed to have more time. The President of the United States had announced roughly six months ago that the world was going to suffer a cataclysmic event in December 2012. The world as they knew it was going to end.
The President had assured the nation that steps were being taken to save as many human lives as possible. They were building ships, called Arks, to house people until the Earth stabilized again. Scientists had assured him that the Earth would become inhabitable again, but they would have to rebuild everything.
Tommy had gone to see his parents for the weekend. He wanted to make sure that they had everything ready to leave. Each person was allowed to take one suitcase of clothes and one suitcase of keepsakes like photos and other mementos of their life. They were all supposed to start boarding the Arks in the beginning of December. They had received their Ark assignments a few weeks ago. Adam, Tommy, and most of their families and friends would be on Ark 14 which was boarding in L.A.
While Tommy was gone, all Hell broke loose. The earthquakes started. They were small at first, but soon enough they grew in intensity. All over the world things were falling apart. The President ordered an emergency evacuation of the country. Everyone was supposed to make their way as quickly as possible to their Arks. Adam tried to reach Tommy, but cell phones and land lines were out.
“Adam, we’ve got to go. We’ve got to get to the Arks.” Leila told her son.
“But what about Tommy? I can’t just leave him.” Adam stated near tears.
“Sweetie, I’m sure that he’s on his way to the Arks with his family right now.” Leila spoke soothingly.
Adam finally agreed to go with his parents. He hoped and prayed that Tommy was on his way.
They didn’t have far to go, but it took them hours. It was complete chaos in the streets of L.A. Buildings and bridges were crumbling down. Cracks were forming in the roads. Everyone was trying to get to the Arks.
When Adam and his family arrived at the Ark, they ran into some other family members and friends. No one had seen Tommy yet. Adam was getting worried. Tommy and his family had a lot further to travel to get here. What if they didn’t make it through all the mayhem? What if the Ark left without Tommy and his family?
The people who were already on the Ark gathered in the large common area to wait for news and/or their loved ones. People were in shock. Everyone had thought that there would be more time.
“Adam!” Allison shouted as she entered the common area with her family.
She ran over to her friend. He threw his arms around her in a tight embrace. She returned the hug. She was glad to see him.
“Where’s Tommy?” Allison inquired as she looked around and saw everyone but him.
“I don’t know.” Adam whispered as he started to cry.
Allison hugged her best friend tighter. She tried to comfort him, but she didn’t know what to do or say. She didn’t know how she would feel if someone she loved as much as Adam loved Tommy was missing right now. As it was, she was worried about Tommy and his family.
For hours, Adam waited for Tommy. He didn’t know how long he sat there and stared at the doors. People brought him food and coffee, but he barely touched anything.
After what seemed like an eternity, Adam saw Tommy run through the door. He stopped and looked around. Adam jumped up and raced toward him. He nearly fell over people in his rush to get to his boyfriend. Tommy saw him and smiled. He started to make his way toward Adam.
As soon as he could reach him, Adam pulled Tommy into the biggest hug ever. He never wanted to let him go. As he was squeezing, he saw his family enter the room as well. He sighed in relief. Everyone he cared about was safe. Tommy’s family joined the others and left Adam and Tommy to their reunion.
“I was so scared, glittterbaby. I didn’t…I didn’t…” Adam sobbed.
“Shh…It’s okay, babyboy. I’m here. We’re safe. That’s all that matters.” Tommy soothed as he looked into Adam’s eyes and cupped his face.
“I love you so much, Tommy.” Adam breathed as he tried to stop crying.
“I love you too, Adam.” Tommy whispered before leaning in to kiss his boyfriend.
They were both relieved that they had found one another again. No matter what happened, they would be okay because they had each other and their family and friends. Even the end of the world wasn’t going to keep them apart.
