Seasons Greeding

I don't like it when my family asks me to forbidden question of, "What do you want for Christmas?" It makes me feel shallow and greedy. When I tell them a card is more than sufficient, they laugh and say, "No, really. What do you want?" And proceed to tell me what they expect in return. Is this what we are? Material things are not always shallow. And wishes for a Christmas list don't necessarily need to be material things. I think it takes dialog to have a change in philosophy, but it isn't easy.

I agree with that. But it also takes both people who are willing to change their philosophy to make a dialog work. If one does not want to make that change, then the conversation is moot before it even starts.

Yes. I don't know how to face that. I think the only hope, if it is really an important topic (which one needs to decide whether it is or not), is for both people to get to to the root of why they have the belief, and for both people to be willing to explore their feelings and thoughts, and try to come to an agreement on each other's views, even if it isn't consensus.
