What the hell is going on down in Mexico that is seeing these increasingly huge numbers of men, women and children just fleeing the country?

it would be funny, if it wasn't true. i know people who have been robbed and killed down there on vacation. don't go to the wrong cabos..

It's been corrupt as hell for decades though hasn't it? Has it maybe just gotten a whole bunch worse?

I mean they must be in trouble if tourists are getting menaced, tourists are typically safeguarded by organised crime.

Reminds me of Cuba, where tourist cars have special number plates so that criminals know to leave them alone, lest they take a short trip off a long peer with rocks in their pockets.
