yeah, so much is hidden from public knowledge.
i always found it so unfair that renters would pay an owner's mortgage for decades and get nothing out of it. and as you say, when an investor developer wants to expand their envestment the renters end up holding the short end of the stick in the name of progress. jane jacobs was all about stopping the dismantling of long time communities from investors who simply wanted to develop units for mass markets, and not provide the infrastructure they took away. baltimore and detroit are full of vacant factories and displaced communities, as are many other places of growth. kowloon, now there's a shithole to investigate. i can't even imagine who owns those ratholes that the chinese live in..
