I didn't know anything about this until I picked up a book that used stills from the film, it's very strange, the elves are more like the Scandanavian Svart-alfar in style, quite ugly. No pretty-boy Legolas here.
But if you read The Hobbit in isolation and knew nothing of LotR then you wouldn't imagine the elves to be Legolas-like would you? They're quite a different animal from one book to t'other.
