Someone who you can count on to be there for you when you need them - someone who will build you up when you need it or give you a harsh reality check when you need one of those. You have to be able to have an honest conversation with them.
Research for the thesis. The religious school here (I don't know what denomination... eep) has all the original documents from the China Inland Mission, i.e. tons of correspondence from and oral interviews with missionaries who worked with Muslims in China until they got kicked out. Exciting!
I'm going to have to agree with Matt on this one. A friend is someone you can come to during your worst and best times and expect sympathy and congratulations as warranted. There is also a definite need for trust and honesty.
