SGA+penguins=...what, exactly?

Before I inadvertantly read any more penguin!slash, I need to know the whys, hows, what-fors, etc, as it pertains to Stargate Atlantis. It has the feel of an inside joke I haven't been in fandom long enough to recognize, so if someone would clue me in to its origin that'd be great. I'm assuming it's because of Antarctica, but other than that...

It started out over at pegasus_b, with a story that had Daniel turn into a monkey. Then in the sequel, John and Rodney turn into penguins. Then another story was written (and is not online anymore) was written, also with John and Rodney turned into penguins. It's taken off from there.
