"Aya is the leader" YES. I HATE that. AND IT'S ON THE BOXED SET. HOW HORRIBLE.

I can't fault half the fandom for its confusion thanks to things like that-- and simple cultural assumption. I will be honest, I thought Aya WAS the leader when I first watched it. We expect the focal character of a series to also be the One In Charge in our culture. It's just aggravating to see all the same.

And I totally respect that perspective. Like I said, no one can help which characters and pairings they find most appealing. I do respect Yuriko for getting on the plane and being sad, sure, but opting to remember Ken fondly rather than abandon her dreams for someone who had clearly chosen not to spend his life with her. Made me sad for them because I thought they were a good match (and she was so good for Ken too ;_; ) but yeah. She wouldn't have been as respectable or likeable had she hung back ( ... )
