staring out of bathroom windows

I spent  some unexpected time alone today, which was weird at first just by virtue of being a pretty rare occurrence lately. But I finished reading a book and thought a lot, and it actually felt good. Not that I came to any epic self-realizations (or even gained much clarity), but I think it helped just to touch base with myself and get a sort-of ( Read more... )

Watching animals during their mating rituals certainly makes us put the whole "dating and relationships" thing into perspective, doesn't it?

I find it fascinating that we as human beings, despite our nearly fanatical desire to prove ourselves somehow... more intelligent or more important than everything non-human; are truly creatures driven by instinct. Slaves to our baser instincts, no matter how hard we try.

This is true, and it's funny to observe the different ways we find to channel or symbolize it or whatever. I could totally picture that pigeon in a leather jacket going "how YOU doin'?" instead of waddling in a circle and cooing. :P

I talk to myself all the time. It helps me keep either organized, or on track. Makes sure my thoughts are on the task at hand, I suppose; though this might have to do with my learning style. I definitely learn best by doing it, rather than hearing about it or seeing how to do it. With this in mind, when I talk to myself, I'm doing something, and it focuses me.

If you're the same, I guess it's useful. If you're talking to voices in your head about which buildings to burn down first... I would say it's not therapeutic.

Pigeons are GROSS!

That is all.

I don't think I learn that way, but that's an interesting perspective on it...kind of, but not quite like the way I use self-talk. I say stuff out loud when a) there's something that I'm having a hard time believing/coming to terms with or b) when I'm completely shocked or overwhelmed. I guess it has to do with grasping for clarity when I'm floundering :) which is similar to using it to gain focus, I guess.
PS-The voices told me that when the time comes for the Great Burning, I should start with Lyon street.

Awesome. Just be sure that you don't carry Too Much, lest you run Out of Mana.

I talk to myself if I'm extremely panicky but need to keep myself focused. I guess an emergency situation is what comes to mind first. At work that time I burned my hand really badly by grabbing the handle of pan that had just been in a 400 degree oven for 20 minutes, I was talking to myself just to keep myself on track with what needed to be done. I remember saying things like "breathe, Stacy" and "the first aid kit is right around the corner".

I guess it's therapeutic, if it's helping you. In a situation like that, if I hadn't spoken out loud to try and calm myself, I might have just completely freaked out. Not sure though.

On a side note: You must have been glad I wasn't there eh? Considering my frequent urge to kick pigeons...

I remember doing something similar when I was babysitting my cousin and thought I lost him for a few minutes...dunno if it actually helped me focus, but it was sort of an outlet for my panic. :)

Sucks to your side note D: WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE AND YOUR DISLIKE OF PIGEONS?

I read that as "I saw two male penguins trying to win over a female penguin" first and spent a few minutes puzzling over the apparent existence of penguins in Ottawa. Very cute, though. I like pigeons. They're fat. I want to hug them. Achem...

You know you can always baw-thah me with your turmoils, mental or otherwise, yeah?

Having mentioned animals, I'll add one more note: I saw a mini Poodle today about the length of a rugby ball. Adorkable.

Talking to yourself aloud: v. v. therapeutic. I do it all the time, regardless of whether or not there are other people around. I talk to inanimate objects sometimes, too. It helps me keep my thoughts organized. :3

THANK YOU, pigeons are the best birds since sliced bread. Omg, the poodle reminds me that today I saw a weiner dog puppy (sooo tiny) being dragged along the sidewalk by its owner. o_O It was strange and adorable.

...the only time I can recall talking to inanimate objects for any length of time was when my computer quasi-broke and I was urging it to turn on and let me save my files. I was like, "come on baby, come on, you can do it! *patpatpat*"
