It's really not that hard, honest. And I'm a crap knitter! It takes me ages and I always end up with RSI in my right shoulder and left wrist. Four different women have tried to show me how to do it properly, quickly and painlessly -- and I have failed to get it every time.
Ah. There are two skills at play here. One is being able to knit quickly and painlessly. The other is being able to follow (or design very simple) knitting patterns. I have the latter but not the former. I want both!
Yeah, my third needle is a little short fellow with a funny kink in the middle so that the stored stitches are less likely to slip off while I'm busy with the other two needles. Cabling is one of those thinks that looks really impressive but turns out to be quite simple. I can't believe I was so scared of it for so many years!
I think most things become a lot more simple when you know what it is you're doing, what the next step is and that you definitely did the previous ones correctly :-)
That's gorgeous! I refuse to believe that your're a "crap" knitter. My mom was a wonderful knitter and she crocheted and did did all kinds of hand sewing, make lovely blankets and all kinds of hand sewing and never did anything that ornate that I can remember.
That's really lovely. I wish I could do it. I can knit but I can't seem to get past the most basic stitches and I can't even cast on or off properly! :(
My mum and my mother-in-law are both excellent knitters and the difference between them and me is that they can knit really fast and I can't. That's where my crapness lies. But never mind. I only get the urge to knit in the autumn anyway, so it's hardly the tragedy of my life. :D

Learning is always harder than doing.
