Binky 1990-2006

Feb 09, 2006 11:03

Mum had to have one of the dogs put down last week. She was almost sixteen years old, and had been suffering for a long time with an odd disease that caused her to run around in ever-decreasing circles, turning always in the same direction, with her head hanging down ( Read more... )

The poem was lovely to read - so funny and warm. Made me smile like an idiot. And now people are looking at me strangely. I blame you.

I'm very sorry about Binky.

Almost sixteen years is a grand old age for a dog, though. Our longest-lived pet (not including her still-alive sister, Rusty) -- and we've had a LOT of pets. So there's no need to feel sorry. :) It's like when you read something like "Man, aged 120, dies". Reactions tend to be "120? Really? Wow, that's old. Lucky man. But I bet he was ready to go." and so on.

Glad you liked my cheep'n'cheerful poem. :D

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear about the pooch! Yes, I know, she did have a good long life, but it still must be hard to lose a friend you've known that long. My own dog will be twelve this month, and I'm mentally preparing myself already. :(

RIP Binky! Dogs are the best....

Bah! Twelve isn't old! It's the prime of life! And think of all goodness you're providing in the form of snotty tissues... :p

Dogs are the best....

I like most mammals, to be honest -- except naked mole rats.

It was only my second attempt at poetry since leaving my teens, which makes it even more impressive! :D

It's always hard to lose them tho'. The dog in my icon is Psyche, the mother of Otis who was with us for twelve years-- a long time for a basset hound.

a long time for a basset hound.

It certainly is! I gather that cocker spaniels can reach eighteen years -- not to belittle Binky's longevity. We have such bad luck with pets that it's a miracle she lived to be so old. Most of our cats/dogs/random-injured-wild-animals never made it into their second decade. And yet as a family we still persist in thinking that we provide a good home for pets...

Ha. The MSPCA rescued a cocker spaniel, which was 22 years old, because it was a bit smelly. True story.

Binky is officially coming second in our pet longevity ranking (Rusty is winning by default) and if she was human she'd be Jilly Cooper or the Mary of the Four Marys that was sporty.

Nice poem, little sis. x
