LOL @ Chop Suey

For those of you in-town under a rock, or out of town, Chop Suey is a club on Capitol Hill which used to be "The Breakroom" in the 90's, and has since tried to revive itself and be a hep & groovy club. About a year ago, during a hip-hop kiddie show, a shooting happened, and it freaked everyone out ( Read more... )

So, theoretically, I could have a girlfriend smuggle in all sorts of weapons. Right? That smacks of discrimination. I carry around a folding knife too. I mostly use it as a tool. I know to leave it at home when I go into government buildings, but otherwise it's always with me.

I have never been searched to enter a bar. Ever! Then again, I rarely go into bars anymore.

Exactly, sir - you've hit the nail on the head here. It wasn't only stupidity on the venue's part (if you're going to implement a search procedure, please be smart about it, and legal...) and it also gave the clear message that the women were free to be the 'mules' (let's use some smuggling terms!) for any contraband they hoped to find on the men. I suspect it also had to do with the door goon being male, and no female is going to let him "pat them down for 'security' purposes" (insert bevis and butthead laughs here) and yet, that's part of the problem. If they're going to do a real pat-down, get a woman bouncer at the door too, so equality can be met. Then, like any other sensible venue that does a search, publicly list the items you're searching for or not allowed so a customer has a choice to even enter with them, or to know that of all things on their person, only items A,B, and C might be bad for the venue ( ... )

Well, that's another thing: I generally don't like Hip Hop. I like it about as much as karaoke. It almost guarantees that I will leave. I consider Rap "music for the melodically impaired". Besides that, the fans are kinda violent. Y'know: It's like crack music and stuff.

Yeah, wouldn't we all like to be the bouncer that searches the girls!

On a tangent, I talked to a really nice looking San Diego Police woman today. She was blond and young. I wanted her to search me for my weapon.

I think the last time I was in that place was when Hells Belles did their "final show ever" you know... about 100 shows ago? I agree that room sucks for live shows even without the pat downs.

Yup, it's why they seem to have more DJ related events there, it seems, or they get the live show when the other venues are full. It just ain't built for live music and is laid out oddly. I think the whole pat down thing is probably from big daddy, who bought them a year or two ago and is now run by some Japanese corp or whatever that hears there's a Seattle club on their books now that diversifies their portfolio... maybe when it was locally run and owned they'd have had a chance. I'm talkin' out my ass now, though - I'd rather not know enough about who owns 'em or why they suck like that.

Yeah, fuck, I hate that place. I never really liked it when it was The Breakroom (shitty sound, poor layout) but the Breakroom at least had this whole, "Okay, look, yeah, we all know this isn't the greatest facility ever so let's just acknowledge that and move on to having a good time" vibe going for it, sort of like the early the Offramp, so you just dealt with it and had a good time.

The last time I went to Chop Suey was a couple years ago and at some point during the evening it struck me that except for the nice woman taking money at the door every other person I'd encountered gave me serious attitude. And you know me, I'm polite and nothing at all like a troublemaker. After I had that thought I was all, well, screw it, I'm leaving. And I've seen no point in going back since.

Yup. I had to go last when Donita Sparks was in town, of course - I'd go anywhere for that... but otherwise, I just forget the place is on the map. I suppose that by buying the ticket ahead of time, I did my support duty financially for the fundraiser, and now have the better sense to see Witchburn in nearly any other venue, along with the bands who opened, vs. thinking it would have been worth it to go there. Granted, I also wanted to mingle amongst the rollergirls, because that's a good time, too. Gonna have to twist their arm to throw the fundraisers in clubs that don't suck.
