I'm glad she talked about this, hopefully it will spur on some thinking in medical circles and parenting groups. What I want someone to answer every time I see or read a report is "what changed between then and now?"... because for the rates to go up, something is different, and clearly that "something" would be a place to start. Is it just the MMR? Did they change mediums for the vaccinations? Are they classifying different things, that previously didn't get classified as "autism" into autism (the answer to this one is actually YES - but even with them added in, are you still getting the crazy increase in "traditional autistic symptoms"?). You get all these one sided reports, where everyone just keeps saying the same thing, but doesn't move onto the next diagnostic steps. It's maddening.

I'm glad you mentioned the change in the diagnostic criteria for autism. I want to add another reason. The funding and services available to families who have kids with autism has increased exponentially as compared to what is available to families who have kids with other developmental disabilities. Parents now seek autism diagnoses so that their children will qualify for these much needed services. Especially because the new diagnostic criteria are so incredibly broad now, it makes much more sense to seek an autism diagnosis, even if your child's primary diagnosis is something else entirely.

I know this to be true. In one other rare example, I know of a little boy whose mother is pushing for an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis, but this boy is fine. He is 8 and his mother is just screwing him up and wants attention among other things ( ... )

One thing is that the childhood vaccine schedule keeps growing. They are injecting and creating more and more vaccines for children all the time ( ... )

It was the MMR I reacted oddly to also. My mother describes episodes of glassy stares afterwards. I have a sensory dysfunction classified as an Autistic spectrum disorder, among other unexplained neuro problems.

Came over because I've been missing you in the UC comm, hope you are well.

My little brother developed an auto-immune illness some think was triggered by vaccines too.
