My old one had its own work table that it fitted into - but both table and machine were worn out and we got rid of them before we moved. I did like the old one's table.
I used to almost always cut on the floor - but my knees object these days. Fortunately we have a large, solid, dining table which works really well - except that it is downstairs and the machine is upstairs. But cutting everything out first is not really a hardship in the general scheme of things :)
I was taught to use an electric sewing machine at school - but was not good at controlling it at all. Once I got my own electric one (We had a 1920s hand cranked Jones machine of my granny's for a long time) I realised it was because we had to keep our shoes on - and I quickly learnt to use the foot pedal bare-footed from choice.
It is about 12-13inches long - so fairly standard for a basic Janome one :) (It does straight, zig-zag, stretch stitch and buttonholes - that is all I really need.)
Yay for new sewing machines! I hear you on the table situation, though. Mine has its own large table, a kind of folding one with a small permanent part in the middle, and the other two parts able to be folded down - bought so I wouldn't use the space permanently for other stuff than sewing. Now guess which table is always put up and beleagured with other things? ;op It's mostly folded and unfolded laundry, but still....

One time I didn't even had a table, put my sewing machine on the floor and used my knee for the pedal.

Also, I only sew barefoot. I don't even like wearing slippers.
