write a letter. that was the worst, most il-formed argument I have ever read. I found it to be incredibly rude, which reflects terribly on him and immediately causes him to lose all credibility in my book. I already had a sour taste in my mouth after the first sentence. sure, one person may ride the elevator, but if you have nothing better to do than to shower them with disrespectful and condescending words, I consider you to be much worse off.
Yes, he is right, there is a problem here with obesity and laziness. like you said, our culture is kind of a petri dish for it. Its the way he made his point that is faulty.
oh, and by that last point, I dont mean to make it sound like obesity and laziness are always connected. the two need to be addressed separately. I do agree sometimes theres a connection, and genetics and finances are CERTAINLY not to blame all the time either, especially in the severely obese, but you cant generalize.
That's my basic issue with it. His argument makes it sound like only obese people are lazy, and laziness is the only cause of obesity, which it most definitely isn't. I know for a fact that exercising the recommended amount every week doesn't help if you overeat
( ... )
I know some people are more prone to having extra weight, and they can live healthy lifestyles and still have it...but as far as genetics, no one is predisposed to be 400 pounds...that severely overweight. Im thinking those are the people hes trying to target in this essay, but he still missed the other factors that are involved.
I have to say, while I don't always agree with Gaither's opinions, I think it's a little bit sad when people take him seriously. In every column he writes, he's being extremely sarcastic. I just take his columns with a grain of salt.
I actually save it to the end, usually. Save the best for last, and all that... ^_^
