You know, if Princess Leia had access to WikiLeaks, Alderaan never would have been destroyed.

Only if you give her the current US government to go along with it. If you think Palpatine had things bogged down in the senate before....

How long do you think the Sith Alliance would remain secret with Wikileaks?

My original thought was, Leia was trying to sneak the Death Star blueprints out on R2D2, right? And Vader was looking for R2. But if she had uploaded the plans to WikiLeaks, they would have been instantly mirrored on servers across the Galaxy, so why destroy Alderaan? Actually, I guess there was no real reason for the destruction of Alderaan, other than to demonstrate that he could do it. So maybe that wouldn't have helped.

Princess Leia's concerns were more practical - she knew that simply uploading plans to the Wikileaks servers would take years due to the limitations of light speed. Mirroring said data across an entire galaxy would take even longer! By keeping her plans inside of some physical media, she could take advantage of the faster-than-light travel offered by modern vessels to disperse her information faster.

I think this should be proposed as a Writer's Block question.

This just proves that the fastest way to transmit information is up the ass of a warp-enabled R2 unit.

If Wikileaks existed in the world of Star Wars, we would have had Darth and twins Vader as they would have been discovered when Luke was still discovering how itchy it is to stroke yourself on a sand planet.

First off, Darth Vader is a native of Tatooine, a poor farm planet with very little industry. From this bleak beginning, Darth Vader pulled himself up by his bootstraps. He worked very hard to get where he is today, and I think he deserves some respect.

As the leader of The Empire, Darth Vader has brought order, security, and freedom to the citizens under his protection. The freedom of citizens of The Empire is dependent on the government's ability to keep information out of the hands of terrorists like the Rebel Alliance (RA).

The terrorist RA organization is led by a group of religious extremists known as "Jedi." So far, the terrorist Rebels have stolen or destroyed quite a bit of valuable property, and killed patriotic soldiers.

Since you obviously don't support the troops, why do you hate The Empire?

Darth Vader is a brutal tyrant who clings desperately to a tired old religion. He killed all those people! He obliterated an entire planet! What, he couldn't have found an old useless moon somewhere and filmed a demonstration, and presented it in the Senate? I'm surprised to see you defending him, especially considering his support for the Trade Alliance and their reign of terror. Trade! Ha! Smells more like oppression to me.

Vader had to go after a populated target as a display of strength. Those RA terrorists would never have taken him seriously if he went after some useless moon. By killing the people of Alderaan, he probably prevented ten times as many deaths that would have happened in smaller conflicts.

Support for the Trade Alliance is another part of the security plan. The Empire needs strong allies in order to fight the terrorists.

It was chosen not only because of Leia's emotional attachment, but because the Death Star needed to be battle-tested on a large enough planet. The psychological effect was simply icing on the cake. Alderaan may be spared, but at whose expense? Naboo? Corisant? Tattoine?

Had the Death Star plans been public knowledge, the exploit used to destroy it would have been corrected before the rebels could attack it.
