I feel like I should apologize for running people's hit-counts up far out of proportion with their kudos or comments as I cross-referenced and cross-referenced again, trying to trace the possible links between things? (Sorry! Your hits-to-kudos ratio is all out of whack and its my fault!) But here are my best guesses for what inspired what, and who made what.

I feel like a very bad friend! But I obvs need to go back and spend some time browsing your AO3, get a sense of what your faster, off-the-cuff work looks like. Because what I was looking for was crystallized heartbreak, the sense that my heart had been mown down by a Mack truck, what is the point of going on living? And I had absolutely zero impulses to suicide as I read the collection, which left me at something of a loss.

I'm trying not to look at your guesses for fear of contaminating mine, but I do want to counter your description of the exact sort of emotional devastation b leaves behind - I'd say it's more like she rips your heart out and runs off with it for a few miles but usually leaves it somewhere you can find again. not always (Safe & Sound never gave it back), I agree, but most of the time I want to keep living to read the next one.

that said, I agree that element is absent from the set, so I'm alternating between the little kids and the au (with lower-case title, an important clue) for her.

If it helps, in terms of raw connections between stories, two chains are going to look a lot like one chain. That is, every story but the end ones will share elements with exactly two other stories. It's just that directionality abruptly changes partway through the list.

So unless you've got strong directionality feelings about the above list, you can 'bend' it at Interlude-or-so, call Interlude the seed story, and voila! Two chains, with all your existing connections intact.

I totally forgot there could be two chains LOL. I was so confused and trying to figure out how likely it was that two different writers independently decided to write about New Year's Eve parties or that two different writers independently decided to write about Joan playing the accordion. Then I realized that there were two chains. Anyway here's my guess.
