Cogito

Charlie spears a French fry on his fork, holds it aloft. "How do we know," he suddenly demands, "if this fry tastes the same to me as it would to you?" He pops it into his mouth, chews, and swallows - at least Lisa taught him manners - before going on, "I mean, it makes sense. Like, Dad, you love spinach, and I hate it. Maybe we don't have ( Read more... )

Is this... Is this Charlie in college and Dan and Casey still together? How much do I love that thought?

*goes to my happy place*

Yup. Right about ... well, now, I guess.

Have fun in your happy place, where I hope the neighbours are quiet!

Casey will be okay. He will go and buy a book and read up on foundation-level philosophy, and learn just enough from it to ask all the wrong questions and have Charlie roll his eyes and go "Ooooooh, Daaaaad!!"

Yay, Charlie! Oh, I remember having that very conversation (I'm pretty sure I still do on a regular basis). I love how Dan's all interested and eager and Casey's just groaning and wondering why he can't get through a simple dinner without having to take the world apart and put it back together again. Perfect reactions.

Different levels of perception may also account for some of Casey's wardrobe choices. (Possibly also Dana's in S2, but I'm less inclined to be forgiving there.)

Poor Casey. He is sitting there thinking 'Why couldn't he have been a quarterback?'

(Not quite in the spirit of the drabble, but this reminds me... There was a documentary thing on TV a few weeks ago where they used a blue mouthwash to stain the tastebuds of children, and it proved that children with more tastebuds were more inclined to dislike vegetables...

And apparently all young children are more sensitive to the taste of bitter than adults, so dark green vegetables really do taste more unpleasant to all of them. Sorry, that was a bit too literal there, but I thought it was interesting)

Back to the point. Lovely drabble, and the rapport between Dan and Charlie is really sweet. (And I loved the bit where he chews and swallows before speaking. Trust Lisa to raise the only teenage boy who DOES. *LOL* That was a lovely touch.)

(Suddenly imagines an AU where Danny has a really repressed, shy, embarrassed son who has a rapport with Casey... That would be interesting. I wonder whether Danny would be as tolerant as Casey is, or whether he would be more angsty about it...)

Spinach is one of those things you grow into. (Or not.) But even after you learn to eat it, it still leaves your teeth fuzzy.

When out with his friends, Charlie merely shovels food down his neck as though it were going out of fashion, but he knows better than to do it when his dad's around.

Your A/U begs the question: who's the mother??

I don't know Sports Night well enough to comment on the "Who's the mother?" thing. Erm...the psychiatrist with the distinctly dodgy taste in blouses? (She wouldn't tell Danny that he was a father until much later, when the kid was about five or so...) When she has a mental breakdown and has to take a break in a mental hospital, (karma much?) and needs someone to look after the kiddie.

Dana? (A one night drunken stand. Danny has left SN and is off being a novelist...when he discovers the truth...he contacts Casey to try to discover what he knows about it. (Only to find that Cssey is about as helpful as a chocolate teapot...but incredibly jealous)...

The story progresses with the two of them bonding with said sprog...

(Alternatively of course...dun-de-dun...ominous chorus of small choir-boys...it could be MPREG. *ROFL*)
