MAM!

Apr 27, 2007 08:29

Some young whippersnapper cashier called me "MAM" again yesterday. I'm 24 years old. I am not a "mam" (no, not ma'am or madame, its really said just like that, "MAM"). When did "miss" fall out of the vernacular? I don't even look 24.

It passes after a while... either you get used to it, or stop noticing. Plus, some people use words like that for lack of another.

That would probably freak me out.

But you totally radiate old woman! I'd call you ma'am if I was on the other end of a cash register.

It was worth being called "mam", writing this entry, and randomly remembering to check LJ just to read that phrase and laugh my ass off.

When all else fails, blame the femiNazis. For some reason, they find "miss" offensive, so people are reluctant to say it. Besides, Kerri, your age may be 24, but everything else about you says senior citizen.

So what about me exactly makes me so much like a sixty year old Jeff? Is it because I don't get wasted on the weekends? The knitting? The obsession with being active outdoors through various recreational activities? My insect collection? I don't know man, I think what I do is pretty interesting. Most of my friends think so too. Thanks for spelling my name wrong dude.

No problem. And I didn't specify sixty year old, I said "senior citizen." That includes a wide range of ages, not just 60. But yeah, just blame political correctness. It's both easy and very likely true.

How old was this young person and were you in some sort of position of authority over him?

Probably a couple years younger than me. He was a college kid. I was at a cash register buying some things and he was the cashier.

It happened again today at Office Max, but this time it was a girl, also likely an undergrad at Penn State. I guess this is just how it is these days and everyone is just a "mam" now. Jeff probably has a point about it being a by-product of political correctness.
