Imperial Moths 8-31

Its been a month since my Imperial Moth eggs hatched. Most of them are three inches long at this point. This guy was wandering around on the top of the cage, so I got him to crawl on my finger. Almost all of them are in the three inch or longer stage at this point, with a couple stragglers who seem to be developing more slowly for unknown reasons. I am thinking that I might be able to obtain a cage from the entomology department so I can split them up into smaller groups. They don't seem to be interfering with each other too much though. Each one takes its own oak leaf and chews it until it is no more, then moves on to a fresh one. I just have to make sure there are enough leaves to go around.

Just had a chance to go through your recent picture-posts -- very cool. Makes me wish I'd slow down a little more when walking through the woods. I'm always looking for fungus and trees, but I never stop to check out the other life around me. Nature sure is amazing: worlds within worlds within overlapping worlds...
