Summary: Dangerously fluffy fic in which Jack's vortex manipulator gets fixed and the Doctor gets something back he's lost for a long while. :)

Fixing the TARDIS together started with the Doctor's birthday - actually it started with Jack's birthday, which was when the Doctor had surprised him with a freshly repaired vortex manipulator and a shy smile: Jack, who hadn't expected a thing and was frankly shocked the Doctor had even remembered his birthday at all, was profoundly grateful. He hadn't forgotten the Doctor's crack about time-travelling teleports (it still ached in damp weather) so he was doubly determined not to disappoint.

And so he had to come up for something just as good for the Doctor's birthday, of course. He knew when it was; the Time Lord had let it slip one evening when they'd both had a bit too much to drink, and the TARDIS was quite helpful in providing a Gallifreyan-to-Earth-Standard-date translator. He'd left off the age, but that wasn't a problem (and Jack roughly knew how old he was anyway: all he'd been missing were the month and day.)

With a working vortex manipulator and a helpful TARDIS on his side, it was the work of five minutes to go and get what he wanted. He was careful to check and double check the timelines before he left, and this time he had the TARDIS check his work.

After all, there was no need to screw up right out of the gate, right?

He'd just finished wrapping it in some TARDIS-blue-with-pinstripes wrapping paper when the TARDIS helpfully alerted him that the Doctor was starting to wake up. He caressed a branch of her coral, stuck the gift in his pocket and was off toward their shared bedroom in a dash.

"Good morning, sleepyhead." Jack leaned forward to kiss his Doctor, grinning and bouncing on the balls of his feet. "Happy birthday."

"Thank y- wait." The Doctor raised a half-asleep but inquisitive eyebrow. "How did you know it was my birthday?"

"You told me."

"When?"

"Rangoon IV. You don't remember? What am I saying, of course you don't remember." Jack laughed, delighted, over the Doctor's pained groan.

"That wine." The Doctor moaned. "I barely remember the planet."

"Oh come on." Jack kissed him again and flopped down on the bed. "I promise not to tell anyone your star sign or anything silly like that. And I got you a present - that's the best thing about birthdays, isn't it, the presents? Come on, open it!"

The Doctor didn't seem sure whether to hide under the blankets or run away, so he just reddened to the roots of his hair, mumbled "Thank you." and started tearing the paper off.

"Wait a minute." he stared at the object in his hand, lying in the midst of tape and paper once it was unwrapped. "This is - This is mine."

"I know. I got it back for you." Jack held up a hand. "I checked all the timelines, and the TARDIS doublechecked them for me - just wanted to be sure, but She said it was alright. I wanted to get you something special, and you're always complaining how Emily Pankhurst stole your laser spanner ... well, I stole it back."

"Jack." The Doctor's brown eyes were full of love. "I don't know what to say."

"How about, 'Let me take you to bed for the afternoon?'" Jack suggested mischeviously.

"We-ell, if you give me a hand with some TARDIS maintenance - it'll go twice as fast with the sonic and this - " The Doctor caressed the laser spanner lovingly - "I think we can manage something."

"Sounds good to me." Jack grinned. "Sounds good to me."
