I read that article on weight discrimination, and the only reservation I have on it is that the underlying message behind the "don't abuse fat people" angle was not "because being fat is okay," but "because we must PITY them and HELP them."

For the most part, it still treated fatness as a horrible affliction that everyone struggles against, and makes the assumption that fat people are unhealthy and unhappy with themselves.

And yes, I read the comments, too, until it drove my blood pressure up too high. What I just love was all the people saying "yeah, but the HORRIBLE FATTIES are COSTING US MONEY because FAT IS UNHEALTHY and therefore they're SUCKING OUR HEALTH CARE SYSTEM DRY like the GREEDY PIGS THEY ARE." I just wanted to tell them all to go and actually read a scientific, published, peer-reviewed study on it, rather than the summaries presented by the press. Quite often, when we see news stories saying "Fat People Are [insert negative health/brain/social aspect here]," the study itself doesn't support that at all, and in fact

Agreed in principle; in practice, as far as I can tell, politics in the US tends to grind exceeding slow. Unless you're FDR, and maybe not even then.
