things that annoy me today

If someone "follows" me on Twitter, and they have protected updates, I can't see any of their updates to determine whether or not I want to reciprocate. There's something fundamentally wrong about this ( Read more... )

The default setting for the "My Guests" thing is actually "off" (according to lj_news) so people don't need to worry about it unless they want to turn it on.

Yeah, it's a sloppy coding thing - it "switches on" when you go to modify it, but it's off by default. Which is classy for LJ.

There's something fundamentally wrong about this.

I concur. And unlike LJ, Twitter is all-or-nothing; you can't *selectively* lock updates. That's why (with reluctance) I decided not to lock my updates.

Unfortunately that pop-up is set to "on," even while the feature itself is off. If LJers click through the pop-up, it gets turned on. Which--sucks.

I have to admit to having very limited sympathy for the fate of people who click to apply settings changes to their LJ in a pop-up without reading or understanding the pop-up at all.

"It starts out enabled by default," seems misleading in at least two ways. The first, as people have pointed out, is the strictly-being-wrong way (it's disabled by default). The second is that the site prompts you to set it and provides explanations of what it does in a rather upfront manner. The third is that they went out of their way to do all that before turning the feature on specifically so nobody would get caught with a setting they didn't want.

edited to fix that. it gives a potential false impression of being on by default, at least i thought so (esp. given that LJ has a tendency to roll out features in a less than intuitive fashion).

we have "seafair" all weekend, so there's this huge crowded festival with air show and god alone knows what else.

Air show and hydroplane races and visiting Navy ships at the port and and and. It's the final weekend for the sea-themed festival of the "home of Boeing", whose official storyline is that the Seafair Pirates took over the city and King Neptune called in the Navy to "liberate" Seattle from the Pirates....

Even MS gets into the act - well, at least, the FlightSim team used to invite the Blue Angels over to play Flight Sim with the devs. Reportedly it's a "OMG you work on FlightSim?" "OMG you're a blue angel?" kind of lovefest.
