A Great Poker Hand

My friend Doug Parvin sent me this link. It's one of the greatest hands I've ever seen.

Not about poker... garybart January 5 2008, 06:11:47 UTC
... because I know squat about poker. What's Doug up to these days anyhow? I see from your blog that you're at Rochester for the year. (Maybe I'd learned that already? Hmm.) Hope the job market this year's treating you well. I'm on the search committee for a TT position we're trying to fill at CWU, which is a distinctly weird experience for me, as a guy they just hired last year.

Doug is on the job market this year. I saw him in Baltimore at the APA. I only had one interview, with Washington and Lee, but Doug had five! Unfortunately one of them was also with W&L. He also had interviews with Bryn Mawr, Western Ontario, Ohio U, Washington U, and one more that escapes me. In any event, I don't think my interview with W&L went all that well, so I'm not counting on a fly-out. Instead, I'm putting all my energy into my job talk with the University of Rochester on January 25th. If I do well at that, I should have a good chance of landing the tenure-track position here.

I hope things are going well for you at CWU. I'm actually looking forward to being on search committees. I'm eager to inflict on others what was inflicted on me. Mwaaahahahahaha!!! :)

If either of you do wind up at W&L, you should look up Steve Peterson. (You guys came to Rutgers before Steve left, right?) He's out of philosophy (and into screenwriting), but he's married to a Rutgers Comp. Lit. grad who started working at W&L this year.

Good luck at the job talk.
