Hooray for Lives of Others fic! This is a crucial missing moment, a very satisfying take on how we get from the following-Wiesler scene and the Dreyman's new book.
Oh, very nice icon! It was hard to find a place to slot a fic in, because the canon is so perfectly self-contained, but the prompt gave me the clue as to where it might go. I'm glad you liked it :-).
You are one of my favorite online writers, so when I saw your glowing review of "The Lives of Other" I immediately checked it out to watch it. It was, as you said, beautiful and thought-provoking. Thank you for sharing the movie with your readers.
This fic fits perfectly into the movie's canon. I like getting the chance to actually see Dreyman's thoughts, instead of having to guess at them from his actions. I love his rejected comments: How dare you listen to us in bed; please don't ever become a playwright; why?
And I really like how, when he begins to write again, you know he's going to write the book, and it will be published, and finally, his words will reach Wiesler. Beautifully done.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed 'The Lives of Others', and yes, getting into Dreyman's head a bit was fun. I thought it was fascinating and clever that the movie didn't give us a face-to-face confrontation between them, which is what I'd been expecting, but when I wrote this fic I really saw the problems with that - there's nothing they can say to each other that isn't intensely personal, but they don't know each other in a way that allows them to say intensely personal things to each other. The book cuts across that. I have to say, if I could make a fictional book real to read it, it would be that one.
