I have some sense that people who thrive on rules are attracted to SCD partly because it is a theoretically perfectable dance form--that is, there *is* a "right way" to do everything, because the Society says so. Or if it doesn't say so, it's just because it hasn't been legislated yet ( ... )

Well, if we had a Dursley here, maybe that would happen...

I think my favorite Scottish teachers combine seriousness about getting the dance to match a particular form, with a certain amount of lightness or levity about the importance of it, although I think they generally do take it seriously. But my favorite teachers (not just of Scottish) don't broadcast the subtext "You're an idiot!", although they may well broadcast the subtext, and say, "You're totally wrong!". Even in a formal class.

There are similar questions on the music side of things. If you're feeling reductionist, you could try to reduce many musical choices to "do I obey tradition / expectations at this point, or change what I'm doing?" That would be oversimplification, though.
