The typographic mistakes article gave me flashbacks to my Ph.D. After I'd submitted my very first draft of my very first research on my very first chapter, my supervisor covered it in red ink and explained all of the typographic and punctuation errors. He told me, in no uncertain terms, that my success as his student depended on the mastery of the distinction between the hyphen, the en-dash, and the em-dash.

That set the tone for the next five years. I passed my viva simply to spite him.

I wonder precisely how many great writers have been obsessed with typography.
