By the time they arrived in Shima, the sun was dancing on the edge of the horizon, a gigantic golden disk hovering in the East over the ocean. Its light danced across the surface of the still water like a bath that led into where the heavens and the earth met.

The road that led into the town from the north ran along the edge of the water and the boys sitting in the car could look out the window and watch it as they sped forward. An old wooden sign shaped like a gate greeted them. Welcome to Shima it read in beautiful white calligraphy.

Aoi hadn’t slept at all that night. He sat in the passenger seat the whole way through keeping whoever was driving company. Behind the wheel at the moment was Reita. He turned to his friend and asked “Have you been here before?”

“A couple of times.”

“Where should I turn?”

“When we reach the town, turn left and head toward the beach.”

“Alright.”

It couldn’t have been more than 5 in the morning and yet, the air felt warm. Coming off of the sea, it had a fresh scent to it that filled your body and made you feel light. Birds could be heard singing in the trees.

“People wake up early in this town compared to Tokyo,” Aoi said as he held his hand out the car window and let the soft wind thread through his fingers.

When they arrived at the beach, Reita finally killed the engine and parked the car where the last strip of road ended facing the sand and beyond that the ocean and the rising sun.

“It’s beautiful,” Kai said from the back. Reita and Aoi hadn’t realized that he was awake. The latter turned around and smiled at his friend.

“It is, isn’t it?”

“It might be too early for you to try and go find her right?” Kai asked.

“Yeah,” Aoi turned around and stared forward, his gaze like the others’ captured by the colors of the ocean sunrise. Along the shore, they could see the rocky edge of the island country emerging powerfully from the sea. And at the tip of the cliffs, stood a lone and beautiful lighthouse. In other places of the world, it would seem that man had taken over nature, subdued it but here in this place, right where they were staring at the ocean and in the distance the small white dash of that lighthouse, there existed a profound harmony.

“Maybe we can take a nap on the sand for a couple hours?” Reita suggested with a perky smile.

“Sounds like a great idea to me!” Kai laughed. He looked to his right and to his left where he was sandwiched by his other friends as they slept deeply. He shook them both awake.

“Are we there?” Ruki mumbled as he rubbed his eyes with the back of his hands.

“Mhm,” Kai answered.

The five of them filed out of the car and stretched, free finally of the confines of the vehicle. The air felt good inside of them and as they walked toward the water, it was almost as if they were well rested.

Ruki took his shoes off and rolling up the ends of his tattered old jeans, stepped into the sea. The water as it rocked in a steady rhythm, pressed up against his bare skin. The five of them were standing away from one another, each young man immersed in the peacefulness of the moment, alone with his own thoughts and yet with the company of his friends.

Several minutes passed like this in silence. Staring off at the ocean. Ruki getting his feet wet. Kai finally noticing him standing there looking like a child, walked closer to the water’s edge and stopping next to Uruha said to him in a voice full of contentment “He’s like a little kid.”

“Yeah.” He smiled in reply.

“There were days like this back then, wasn’t there?” Kai mused. He folded his arms and watched as Aoi walking up to Ruki said something that had made him laugh.

“Remember when we climbed the mountain?” Uruha  grinned as the memory came back to him.

“Yeah, and Reita hurt himself. Who could forget?”

Uruha was quiet for several moments. “This is nice…”

“Yeah…”

“It’s nice to know that it wasn’t just my memory.”

Kai looked down and smiled to himself. “Yeah, I know exactly what you mean.”

“Do you think that little shop over there is open?” Reita asked pointing to a beachside shack a little ways away.

“Maybe,” Aoi replied.

“I’m going to go see if they have something to eat. Anyone want to tag along?” He looked at the other four.

“I’ll go!” Ruki immediately volunteered, stepping out of the water and toward Reita.

“The two of you should be enough,” Aoi said as he walked over to the dry sand and sat down.

“Bring me a coke.” Uruha sat down next to him.

“Kinda early for that don’t you think?” Kai laughed.

“No, not really.”

“Anymore requests?” Reita asked in a chipper voice.

“Just general food and drink,” Kai replied.

“K! Let’s go Ruki~”

They watched their two forms retreat into the distance quietly, feeling the calming sea breeze as they sat there comfortably and at peace. “Something is different about the two of them…” Kai said, breaking the silence.

“There goes the wedding!” Aoi said lying down in the sand.

“Wow! You are willing to go that far?”

“No but Ruki is~”

“I don’t know…I think Ruki cares more about Reita’s happiness than you give him credit for.”

“Reita is like a dog, okay?”
“A dog!” Kai erupted in a fit of giggles.

“As long as he is in a safe place with people who love him, he’s happy right?  So…what I am trying to say is that Ruki always gets what he wants right? And if he thinks that it’s possible to have him and keep him happy, he’s going to do it,” Aoi smiled confidently, convinced that his analysis was sound. “Besides, Ruki is more mischievous than you give him credit for.”

“Oh, no trust me,” Kai lifted up his hands. “I credit Ruki with all the mischief the little imp deserves.”

“Ruki’s cute,” Uruha said somewhat randomly.

“Yeah,” Aoi sighed and added humorously “and evil.”

Across the shack’s old wooden door was pinned with a rusty nail an old note that read in messy hiragana “Out for vacation. Store closed.” The two young men stared at it, weighing their options. They had trekked for a good 10 to 15 minutes through the sand to get to the little shack and the last thing they wanted to do was to go back without anything.

Reita pressing his forehead against the dingy aged window peered inside. “Well, they have stuff in there…”

“What are you suggesting?” Ruki asked with a small smile.

“Uhhh…nothing?” he smiled back at him.

The front door was locked so the two boys walked around the small building and finding a rear entrance were pleased to find that the lock that hung limply on the door only made it seem like it was bared. In fact, the metal hook that was supposed to attach the door to the frame was loose and needed to be screwed back on. Fortunately for the boys, the owner didn’t anticipate any forced entries in his time away and had decided to postpone the repair.

Quietly, Reita opened the back door and snuck inside with Ruki following behind him. They had no intention of stealing from the store. They were just going to grab what they needed and leave some money on the counter but they were very much of aware of the fact that if they were seen, they would still be charged with a crime.

The rear of the store was stocked with all sorts of beach related and fishing supplies: sunscreen, large umbrellas, fishing rods, big plastic portable cases. The front of the store was where they kept all the food and drinks. The shack was stuffed to the brim with all these things. It wasn’t very large inside, merely three small rooms: a bathroom, a little back room and a front room and there were so many various objects packed inside that it looked like a hoarder of some sorts lived there.

As softly and as carefully as they could, they snaked through the back room. But since there was only one window and it was covered mostly by more supplies, there was very little light in the shack. Reita unable to see really where he was knocked over a box of fishing rods and sent them crashing to the floor. With a quick smack over his mouth, Ruki held in his laughter.

“Shhh…” Reita smiled as he knelt down to gather them back up. Ruki went to help him. “Hey quit tugging at the rods I’m trying to pick up,” Reita whispered with mock anger at him.

“You can’t pick them up from that side. You might break the ends.”

“I’m not being rough.”

Ruki with his hands on one end of a fishing rod, holding it the proper way tugged it away from the other young man but Reita held on. “Hey! Are you trying to break them?”

“No,” Ruki giggled.

“Let go!” Reita whispered.

“Man! This fish is stubborn!” Ruki pulled the rod back as if he were actually fishing.

“Hey!” Reita held on fast trying to get him to stop playing with the supplies. He was legitimately worried that Ruki was going to break something. But Ruki, moving the rod farther back even to the point where it was behind him, led the unsuspecting young man over to him crawling on his knees trying to pull the rod back.

“I love how stupid you are!” Ruki giggled wickedly.

“Stupid?!” But before Reita even realized it, Ruki had thrown his own weight down and had tugged Reita down on top of him. Playfully, the smaller boy wrapped his arms around his neck and held him there.

“Stupid,” Ruki repeated.

Reita’s eyes widened in surprise when he realized the game that Ruki had been playing all along. He had quite literally reeled him in and was now gripping his catch and that catch was him. He was dumbfounded and just looked down at Ruki’s cute face as an impish little smirk appeared on his lips.

“What are you doing?” Reita asked foolishly. His mouth was dry and his mind went blank. Inside his chest, he could feel his heart racing.

“Fishing….” Ruki grinned. Lifting himself up on his elbow, he pressed his lips against Reita’s and kissed him. “Hunting…” he said as he pushed his tongue into his pliant mouth.

Reita could feel a strange ringing in his ears and his skin growing hot. Ruki pressed his leg against his crotch forcibly and let out a deep throated moan. “Wait,” Reita pulled away. “This-this is…cheating,” he looked around the room desperately but for some reason, he didn’t have the will or strength to get to his feet and really push Ruki away.

“No, it isn’t. You’re a helpless boy,” the little imp cooed as he wrapped his arms around his waist and pulled him down again. “And I’m taking advantage of you.”

“Ruki, quit being a little pervert,” he replied finally closing his eyes and letting him kiss him.

“I can’t,” he giggled against his lips, sending chills throughout Reita’s body and right in between his legs where he could feel himself becoming aroused.

Finally returning his kisses, Reita whispered in response in a gentle and soft voice “Don’t make this ugly, Ruki. You’re doing this because you love me.”

His words came like a heavy blow to his chest and just as they fell upon his ears, they seemed to shatter Ruki’s playful evil façade as if it were made of thin and transparent glass. With his arms still wrapped around his neck, he pulled away and looked at his face in the semi-light of the dimly lit shack as the morning sun flooded in through the cracks in the walls and through the cloudy window glass.

“Will you have sex with me?” Ruki asked innocently.

“Sex?” Reita looked away. “I don’t know…It’s cheating…I-”

“Please.” When he looked back at Ruki’s face, he could see the vulnerability and desperation he rarely if ever let show. He didn’t understand why this meant so much to him, why sleeping with him held a strange powerful significance. But even if he couldn’t wrap his head around it, Reita didn’t think he should ask. It wouldn’t change anything. Ruki needed it for reasons unrelated to mere sexual desire. There was some else, something beyond that.

Biting his lip, Reita considered what he should do. Nodding slightly, he agreed.

Without wasting another second, Ruki threw himself on him, kissing him deeply and holding him tightly almost to the point of choking him.

“Easy there,” Reita laughed at his earnestness and gently laid him down on his back. “Easy, easy.” Smoothly, he removed his shirt as he lowered his head and pecked Ruki softly on the lips. “Easy,” he laughed. Without the clothing to hold it back, Reita’s necklace fell forward and dangled in front of Ruki’s face. “Is that annoying?” he asked him, his boyish charm emanated off him.

“A little,” Ruki smiled.

Reita slipped if off his neck and safely placed it on the floor where he knew he would be able to find it. Skillfully, he gently removed Ruki’s shirt.

“What happened to the rough eager boy?” Ruki asked with a laugh.

Reita didn’t bother to reply. He lowered his head instead and started to kiss Ruki’s bare and smooth chest, running his warm wet tongue around the circumference of his small pink nipple. Without kissing, he ran his lips downward, tickling poor Ruki and sending him into a fit of suppressed giggles. “Quit squirming,” Reita laughed. Ruki could hear the arousal in his voice and hearing it for the first time, it ran deep chills up the back of his neck and caused a small moan to escape his lips. “For a boy, you are really soft and squishy,” Reita teased.

“Hey!” Ruki slapped the top of his head.

“Just saying,” Reita looked up at him and smiled. He undid the clasps to Ruki’s jeans and pulled them down. Sitting up himself, he removed them completely and did the same to his underwear leaving the small young man lying there completely naked. “Are you cold?”

“No.”

“Good,” his replied in soft, deep voice. He lifted up Ruki’s knees and lowering his head back down, put his erection into his mouth and gently ran his tongue across his length. Ruki not used to the pleasure of it, arched his back and let out a loud moan. The more he did it, the greater the younger boy reacted, squirming and moaning and biting his lips. Reita sat up and laughed in his boyish way. “This is strange…” he said in good humor.

“Strange?” Ruki was breathing heavy.

“For the first time between us, I’m in control.”

Ruki’s eyes shot down toward his face with a hint of anger in his eyes.

“Aww don’t act like that,” Reita smiled. “This doesn’t have anything to do with power so stop that.” Putting his fingers into his own mouth, he wet them. Ruki realizing what he was doing, grew suddenly nervous. He didn’t anticipate that he would react that way and so he shut his eyes and tried to hide his fear from him. “He hurt you pretty bad didn’t he?” Reita asked, his tone sad and gentle as he placed his damp fingers softly against Ruki’s entrance.

Ruki nodded yes.

“I’m going to go as slow as possible, okay? Tell me if you want me to stop, okay.”

Another nod.

Holding himself, Reita gently pushed his erection against him. “Give me your hand,” he asked him. And as soon as Ruki presented his, he held it tightly. “Are you ready?”

“Mhm.”

“Okay,” he whispered and started to push himself inside. Ruki arched his back feeling him enter him, filling him slowly but firmly. As soon as he was completely inside of him, Reita lowered his body so that he could kiss him. With his other hand free, he held Ruki’s and bringing both his hands above his head, rocked inside of him slowly and sweetly, kissing his bottom lip repeatedly in rhythm. “Is this okay?”

“Yes,” Ruki smiled at him. “I like this,” he whispered.

“I like this too,” Reita returned his smile. “You’re so cute Ruki. How are you even alive?”

“What?” He let out an adorable laugh.

“You’re too cute to be real.”

“Shut up. I hate you.”

“Lies!”

“Don’t trust me. I’m evil.”

“Hey! I know that already!” Reita laughed.

“Yeah, and I’ll eat your soul, I hate you so much.”

“You know, I’ve learned that what you really mean to say is I love you so much.”

“You can’t learn,” Ruki giggled.

“EH?!”

“You’re confused.”

“Am I?” Reita pushed in deeper causing Ruki to throw his head back and bite his lip.

“Fuck,” he whispered.

“Did that hurt?”

“No, no, no…it’s good, it’s good,” he smiled.

“Oh, well then I won’t do it anymore,” Reita teased. “Since…you hate me and all.”

“Okay. I lied. I love you.”

“I can’t trust you!” Reita urged on by a tender impulse kissed him repeatedly all over his face.

“Believe me,” the small boy giggled. “I love you.’

“You love me? Really? Why?”

“I don’t know why….”

“See you don’t love me!”

“I love you.”

“No you don’t.”

“Yes, I do.”

“No,” Reita shook his head cutely no.

“Yes,” Ruki mimicking him, shook his head yes.

“I think not.”

“You don’t think.”

“Hey! You evil little-” Ruki shut him up with a big wet kiss on his mouth. Pressing himself up against him, he urged Reita to push deeper inside of him. “Fine you win,” Reita laughed as he pushed himself downward.

In a deep sing-song voice, he moaned in response “Always~”
