~Anniversary~
Disclaimer: Don't own them! Have no money! Don't sue please!
Author's Note: May 20 is the anniversary of John Spencer's sobriety, so this is to commemorate that achievement. Also, this is unbeta'd so all boo-boos are my own.
Feedback: Like a rainbow on a sunny day.
Summary: Wine and roses, in tenses.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The roses stopped last year. He understood. Last year their priorities were somewhere else; with their missing daughter and keeping what family was left patched together.
Last year the only acknowledgement that he received was when his redheads, Margaret and Mallory, appeared in his office, arms linked. They came bearing a meal that neither of them could afford and shoulders that supported more than they should have to.
Still, he didn't take a drink in fear.
The roses don't return this year. He worries. This year their relationship is strained; both his relationship to them and their relationship with each other.
This year he hopes that some normalcy would return, but instead terrorists blow up men that they admire, leave one of their children for dead. His best friend is so intent on his legacy that he forgets about the past and the history that they share.
Still, he doesn't take a drink in sorrow.
The roses will be a symbol. He will know. Next year they will return when they repair their fractured relationship; his day will be celebrated as it had been.
Next year the world will determine the way they celebrate another year of sobriety, but they will celebrate, together. It will take more than a Presidency to tear their friendship apart and they will treasure the years they have left.
Still, he won't take a drink in celebration.
