Summary: He remembered the promise he had made solemnly that evening.
Author's Notes: I don't really like this, but when I think of Lennie I think of these three men. They just didn't want to talk to each other.

Maybe it was after Claire’s funeral or after another cop’s funeral or after 9/11; all he could remember was they were drinking scotch and soda. Well, Lennie was drinking soda and he was drinking scotch, which probably accounted for his hazy memory. Despite the haze, he remembered the promise he had made solemnly that evening. It was a promise that he had hoped to never fulfill, but refused to break.

Now standing before that open grave, a borrowed shovel in his hand, he wondered how he could actually fulfill this promise. He understood that Lennie did not want to be buried by some stranger with a backhoe, but still. How could he bury with his own hand the best partner he had ever had? How could he fill the gaping hole? How could he blot out this man?

The warm hand that fell on his shoulder was startling, but even more startling was the owner of the hand. Jack McCoy stood there a hat that had belonged to Lennie perched on his head and another borrowed shovel in his hand. A slight tilt of Jack’s head made him look across the grave. There stood Ed Green in a tie that had belonged to Lennie and a third borrowed shovel leaning against his leg.

A small sting of jealousy ripped through him as he thought of Lennie asking these men to help with this solemn task and that he had bequeathed to them things important to him. Then he could feel the weight of Alcohol Anonymous chips and the gold detective’s shield that Lennie had worked so hard for in his pocket and realized that they were waiting for him to take the lead, for him to start the process of laying their friend to rest. And that was the difference.

Lennie was Jack’s friend, perhaps his best friend. They shared a past and a sense of responsibility that the rest of them could only imagine.

Lennie was Ed’s friend and partner, perhaps his best friend and definitely his best partner. They had overcome an initial rough patch to become a tight and uniformed team.

But for him… Lennie was his friend and partner and brother, definitely his best friend and best partner and only brother. They would never be far from each other.

“God rest, my brother.”

A spade full of dirt scattered over the polished wood of the casket.
