Author's Notes:
“What can I do to help,” Don asked entering the kitchen. He had changed out of his tuxedo and was now wearing jeans and a black t-shirt.
Alan shook his head, “Nothing, Donnie. It is your wedding day, you don’t have to do the dishes.”
“Geez,” he slung an arm over Millie’s shoulders. “All my life he complains I don’t do the dishes. The one time I offer and he tells me I don’t have to.”
Millie smiled, “Then I would take this as a sign to run.”
“Excellent plan! So, where is my lovely wife,” he stressed the word wife.
“She and Bill went out back about fifteen minutes ago,” Alan answered, watching from the window at the sink the two people in question dancing near the koi pond.
Don nodded, “Great. Thanks, Dad. And you, too, Mil.” He gave her quick peck on the cheek, which was completely unexpected by both of them, and bounded out the back door.
Moving over next to a smiling Alan, Millie watched with him as Don went over to Melinda and Billy. Instead of cutting between the couple dancing intimately beneath the canopy of stars, he move behind Melinda and wrapped his arms around her to rest his hands on Billy’s waist. They continued dancing to the music, three bodies moving as one.
Millie and Alan watched in silence for a while, until finally Alan sighed, “I still don’t understand.”
“No,” Millie leaned her head against his shoulder, “neither do I, but I understand that they are happy and that they understand what happens between them. I don’t think they need you or me or any of us to understand. They just need us to love and support them. And that, my dear, is your genius.”
“Anybody ever tell you, you are one smart lady,” Alan kissed the top of her head.
Millie laughed, “A few times. Now, come on, there’s stuff we could do in the living room, so they can dance in private.”
Alan followed her from the kitchen, but couldn’t resist one last look back. They looked so happy, the three of them dancing under the stars, and that was something that he could understand.
