The smell of Irish stew filled the kitchen. The pot simmered on the range and bread was baking in the oven. It was at that moment that Don realized her was starving.

“You cooked.”

Coop looked up from the papers he was hunched over at the kitchen table, “Yeah, well, I was jonesing for some good Irish stew and since you and Minda are hopeless in the kitchen, I figured I’d make it.”

“I can cook.”

“No, you can grill. Huge difference. Give that a stir, will ya?”

“Sure,” Don watched as Coop turned back to his paperwork. Slowly stirring the pot, he teased, “So, you really brought your reports home just so you could leave early and cook dinner?”

“I’ll have you know, I left early cause I finished all my reports. This is just some personal
stuff I needed to do.”

“Oh?”

Coop groaned. Don’s ‘oh’ hadn’t just been an ‘oh’ it had been an inquisitive ‘oh.’ Coop knew Don want to know, so he lowered his pen and turned to face him, “It is not a big deal; I’m changing some stuff in my file. My cousin, Mick, has been listed as my next of kin and emergency contact for awhile, but he’s in Vancouver and I haven’t talked to him in years. So, I’ve changed it so that you, then Minda, then your Dad are listed. I’m also changing my benies. Everything goes to you and Minda equally. Finall y, I’ve updated my will, my living will, and I’m going to need you, Minda and Alan to sign some Power of Attorney form things.”

Don stared at his lover and best friend, “What brought on this bout of maturity?”

“Buddy of mine got popped in Philly.” Coop shook his head, “He’s not dead, but he’s good as and he didn’t have a living will. Plus, he and his girlfriend never got married. So, there’s Rhea; two kids, a mortgage, car payments and the uncle’s about ready to swoop in and take everything.” He swallowed an unexpected lump, “Like hell I’m ever going to let something like that happen to you and Melinda.”

Don rounded the counter and laid his hands on Coop’s shoulders, “Thanks, man. That… well, that means a lot.”

Coop made a noise of agreement or approval, but otherwise they remained silent for a few minutes.

Finally, Don had to ask, “Why Dad?”

“Cause I trust him,” was Coop’s simple answer.

It was Don who suddenly had to swallow past the lump in his throat.
