Megan had quickly abandoned the notion of sleeping even with the slight jet lag she was experiencing. The hellish day she had just wouldn't allow her. Every time she closed her eyes another memory of Colby would slam back into her head; and try as she might, she could never find the memory where he was a good, decent agent, man and friend. To know it was all a lie was just overwhelming.
Also overwhelming was the idea of laying in her bed. Now that she knew Larry was safely back on terra firma, it was breaking her heart to be alone in the bed that they had shared for the last few weeks before his departure. The fact that he felt the need to run off to a monastery after his return made her feel completely inadequate. Maybe if she had been a better girlfriend, a better supporter, then he would be here holding her when she needed it.
Perhaps she was inadequate in all aspects of her life. She, the profiler on the team, couldn’t figure out that Colby was a spy. She couldn’t keep the man she loved on the same planet, let alone the same apartment. And, of course, she couldn’t please her father. Good god, why did she always have to go back to him?
A tentative knock on her front door broke her from the dark and brooding thoughts. She truly had no desire to see anyone or even move from the couch, but she had told David that if he needed to talk, she’d be there for him. So, she propelled herself slowly towards the door. Checking the peephole she was shocked by who she saw. When she flung the door open, she nearly launched herself at him, but she remembered what Charlie had told her. Instead, she gave him a watery smile, “Larry.”
Larry was the one to close the distance between them. Holding her, he sighed, “I am so sorry, Megan. I called Charles this evening, as has become my habit, to determine if you had as of yet made your return. I was so shocked when he related the events of the day. He was, I’m afraid, slightly inebriated, but I am sure the words he spoke were true. To say that I am utterly shocked that Colby Granger was a… spy… is an understatement.”
“Oh, thank god,” Megan chuckled against him, causing him to pull back and look at her in confusion. She smiled and touched his face, “The way Charlie and Don were talking I was afraid that you weren’t going to be you, but you sound like you.”
“Well, perhaps when I first returned, I wasn’t me, but the last few weeks have returned my sense of equilibrium, in more ways than one,” he lead her to the couch as he spoke.
“Teach me how to do that,” she asked, settling against him.
Gathering her into his arms, he inhaled her scent and knew that she was the Unifying Theory of Larry Flienhardt, “I’m not sure I can, but I’ve been found to be an excellent listener.”
“Oh, Larry,” her tears started anew. “I don’t know if I can do it. Everything that has happened, it’s all just too much.”
