He wasn’t stupid. He had an Engineering degree from a damn good school, was a decorated Army veteran, and graduated top of his class from Quantico. Still being around geniuses all the time and watching them solve cases he was working on made him doubt himself just a little bit. So, maybe, when he ended up having to escort his boss’s, dad’s girlfriend around for a week (yeah, sure, he didn’t mind) while she helped solve another case, he decided he needed to do something about that. As annoyed as he was having to baby sit Millie, he actually found himself liking the woman and learning something from her. So, at the end of the week, he found himself asking her about the Master Degrees offered at CalSci. And here he was, six months later, studying for his first finale at the CalSci library.

Colby was concentrating so intently on the book in front of him that he never heard the chair across from him scrap back or the body settle into it.

“Colby,” Charlie’s voice was library quiet, but it still made Colby jump.

A hand over his heart, Colby hissed, “Don’t do that to me, Charlie. You nearly gave me a heart attack.”

“Sorry,” Charlie smiled in a way that said he was anything but sorry. “Whatcha doing?”

Colby rolled his eyes, “Making an omelet… What does it look like I’m doing? I’m study.”

Charlie cocked his head in confusion, “For what? If you need help on a case, you could of asked.”

“This isn’t for a case. This is for Peterman’s final and apparently he gives the world’s toughest final. So, if you don’t mind…,” Colby trailed off as he gestured at the books in front of him.

“You mean Peterman in the Engineering Department? I thought he was only teaching grad courses this year.”

“Well,” Colby snatched back the book Charlie had picked up, “since I got my BS in Engineering over ten years ago, I didn’t think I needed another one.” Charlie stared at him in dumbfounded shock, making Colby shake his head, “Sorry to disappoint you Charlie, but I’m not just a dumb jock. I went to college ROTC… Full ride in fact.”

“I never thought you were stupid,” Charlie defended. “I just didn’t know you had a degree in Engineering and I didn’t know you wanted to get your Master’s. You could have told me, I would have helped you get in.”

Colby shook his head, “See, there you go again, ‘You would have helped me get in.’ Thanks, but I didn’t need the help. My GMAT scores alone could have done, but letters from Millie and the AD helped.”

“Oh,” Charlie looked down; there was no denying the hurt look in his eyes.

“Look, Charlie,” Colby put his hand on Charlie’s wrist, “I’m sorry. I’m sorry I didn’t ask for your help or tell you I wanted my master’s, but I didn’t want you to I was too stupid to do it.”

Charlie placed his hand over Colby’s, “I’ve never thought you were stupid, but I would have liked to help.”

“I know, but I wanted to do something without my genius friend’s help,” Colby’s eyes twinkled just enough to prove that he was teasing.

Charlie smiled as he squeezed Colby’s hand before releasing it.

Returning the smile, Colby removed his hand from Charlie’s wrist and sighed, “Although, now that I’ve proved I could get in, I wouldn’t mind a little study help.”

“Ah, well, I’d be happy to help with the math stuff, but,” Charlie blushed and looked down, “I always ask Dad for help on real engineering stuff.”

Colby laughed, “Well, then you better invite me to dinner.”
