The charges being read and the preps nodding acceptance left the uniformed officer, who was in the observation room with Colby, scurrying around the office.
Colby’s friend was backpedaling desperately trying to get the suspect, now confessor, to understand and agree to Miranda. They hadn’t bothered to Mirandize the young man in the room, because frankly they weren’t really sure if he was a viable suspect or a mere witness. Colby was shocked to see him sign the waiver without complaint.
Sighing with relief - though a half decent lawyer would get the confession tossed - Colby turned back to watch the young uniformed office frantically searching through the desk in the room. Realizing what the young man was looking for, Colby reached over and deftly removed the handcuffs from the small pouch on the officer’s belt. Letting the handcuffs dangle from his forefinger, Colby cleared his throat to make the other man look at him. With a slight blush, the office grabbed the cuffs and ran into the interrogation room.
The sound of the cuffs closing around the suspect’s wrists made Colby smile. He had heard that sound hundreds of time before, but somehow this time it had a musical lilt.
