Megan woke to the sensation of someone watching her. After being in the hospital for a week it was a common sensation, but she knew these were new eyes watching her. Megan looked around the room, her eyes settling on the figure in the chair: Dr. Mildred Finch.
“Millie?”
Millie smiled at her and moved closer to the bed, “Hi there. How you feeling?”
“Rotten,” Megan answered honestly as she looked at the older woman. “Is Alan with you?”
“No, sweetie, I thought maybe we could talk alone. I made your hubby go home to shower and play with your little girl for a few hours.”
“Thank you. He’s been here too much. Why did you want to talk alone?”
Millie sighed and in an uncommon gesture took Megan’s hand, “I thought maybe you’d like to talk about the baby with someone.”
“Millie,” Megan sighed as she pulled her hand out of Millie’s, “I’m sorry, but what could you know about losing a child?”
Swallowing deeply, Millie leaned back in the chair, “All I know is that on July 6, 1978, at 6:42 PM my baby girl was born with the cord around her neck. She never took a breath.”
