Windows 7 - Phil's Verdict

So, Windows 7.  I now have a PC with it on.  And, coming from Windows XP, what do I think of it?

Still shit.

My criteria for that?

Oh, many many things.  But I'll narrow it down for you to one thing...

It was still easier to set up dual monitors under Ubuntu than it was under Windows 7.

Actually, let's reword that for accuracy.

I'm curious, how much of that is due to Windows and how much is down to the hardware\drivers itself. I dual-wield monitors at work, and that runs fine - certainly no harder to set up than XP\Vista, and no fuss over refresh rates (one being a DVI connection). I get the impression you'll never be a Windows fan (which is fair enough, I won't "convert" you), and every OS has its niggles and shortcomings, but Win7 (from a Windows user's perspective) is a huge improvement over Vista and XP.

It may well be drivers. Probably is, in fact. But in my experience of PC mag/website reviews, an appalling driver experience under Mac OS X or Linux (when comparing to Windows) will always be the fault of the OS. So I'm simply applying that stringent criteria to Windows... ;-)

In engineering terms, Windows has some good aspects. A solid kernel and some decent documentation, for example. But I won't be a Windows fan until it's worth the money.

That's really the issue for me. The last version of Windows that was CLEARLY worth the money was Windows 2000. Windows XP was borderline, and not necessarily on the right side of the border either. Since then, it's been very much a case of "yes, but why is this worth another xyz quid?"

That's the issue. I'm paying for this. I expect it to be better.
