This evening our Comcast Cable Internet disappeared, and the problem (according to the modem's logs) was on their end. I call their generally-helpful tech support.
Tech: There doesn't seem to be an outage in your area... let me see if there are any notes on your account...

I think my favourite was when they told me they wouldn't credit my account for an outage because I wouldn't shut down all my computers.
