The Truth About High School

Let's face it, if you're gay in high school, or if you're even perceived to be gay, you're getting picked on. There's no two ways about. A shove into a locker, a vicious e-mail or message board posting, comments in the cafeteria -- in some way, shape or form, you're targeted ( Read more... )

Thanks for the friend add :)

I'm not yet into high-school (next year... guh), and I'm not yet openly bisexual with the kids at my public school.
Most people there are homophobic and are afraid of anything being 'gay'. I'm the only one in my school that hasn't used the word 'fag' 'gay' 'bi' 'lesbo' etc. as an insult.
But my town is growing (mentally?). We're a rather conservative town, but we're managing to build our own little gay community, and most people are turning out to be rather accepting.

Huzzah :P

To be fair, perhaps many teachers WOULD do something about it if the victims of such bullying asked them directly. Let's say a kid calls me a fag in class. The teacher has no idea whether I'm gay or not, but I am, and I don't want anyone to know. So I do my best to shrug it off and appear not to be bothered. The teacher sees that I'm not bothered, so doesn't want to make a big deal out of it, which might embarass me further, so she lets it go.

Do I go home angry and lost, or do I approach the teacher and say, "Next time that happens, could you maybe do something about it?" And she does.

I shouldn't HAVE to do that, but maybe, for many teachers, that's all it takes.

To answer your question, my school (in Southern California) is very accepting. I hear plenty of "Ugh, that's gay" in reference to non-persons, as in "This test is so gay" etc. but very little of it directed toward people. I'm out with pretty much everyone who knows me, and none of them are homophobic toward me in any way.
