Many of you have probably heard of the billboard in the northeast for the Philadelphia Coalition of Reason that reads "Don't believe in God?  You're not alone."  So, it's been getting some attention, and according to someone from the American Family Association of Pennsylvania...

I'm astounded by this billboard in Philadelphia, but it pretty much ( Read more... )

It's weird because I don't remember anyone complaining about the yay Jesus billboard a little further north on 95. I remember seeing that and thinking "I wonder what would happen if they put up an atheist billboard?" And now I know! sadly, it was exactly what I expected.

Well sure, it's only wrong when someone else does it. When Keith Ellison took his oath of office on a Koran, I read online comments from right-wing crazypants Christians to the effect of "Well, there goes religious freedom!" And when we invaded Iraq, Pat Robertson made an impassioned plea for religious tolerance, because the country is overwhelmingly Muslim--Barry Lynn responded by personally sending Robertson a membership pamphlet from Americans United for Separation of Church and State, but Robertson, AFAIK, never joined.

Unrelated: Your icon is fascinating and mesmerizing. Any particular reason the dinos are singing S&P??

Dinosaurs are a good medium for that sort of thing. Next they should have them doing stand-up comedy--"What is with the food on a pterodactyl's back? I'm ok with having to walk if that's the alternative!"

I'm also amazed that that much content fit into 40K. I've never been able to make one that small with that much action.

I mean, when we see things happening in Philadelphia, from the Boy Scouts to [the city's] pro-homosexual leanings

I didn't rtfa, but... what? Don't the Boy Scouts love Jesus and hate the gays?

Many ♥s for aggressive atheist extremists! *hugs all round*

I guess it's that once you know the A"F"A, you can pretty much know where they stand regarding issues of homosexuality even if they never say. So, while they don't make it clear, my guess is that the course we're on will lead, someday soon, to gay dudes on corners giving live sex instruction to kindergartners.

I think this post is pretty inappropriate. As a liberal Christian I'm annoyed and embarrassed by the AFA crowd, but I also don't much care for atheist activists either. I think posts like this perfectly underline a strong and ugly hypocrisy, in which people who know that they are in the right and that the right-wing nutcases are lunatics refuse to see that they need to rise ABOVE the name-calling and take the debate to a higher level, and instead succumb to name-calling just because its gratifying.

There are about 5,000 lj communities where you can make fun of religious people, I don't think this should be one of them.

People who give a * about how much the city is or isn't a moral wasteland have their own places to congregate.

I don't know. I think there are people that have asked religious questions on here (such as where to have a wedding, posted earlier today). It's still a part of living in Philadelphia. There are plenty of non-psychopathic Christians and other religious folk - I'm sure the people on this thread know this. It all just ends up following the same phrase "the squeaky wheel gets the oil".

This community also has a tendency to make fun of pretty much everything it comes across. I'm reading through the posts, and really, I can't see real attacks on "religious people". They're countering attacks already made by the FRC. Maybe those posts were deleted?
