Just to top it all off ('it' being the pile of crap massively accumulating on 2011) work has said that they're not going to pay for my course anymore. But if I want to keep the job, I still have to complete the course. That's (I'm guessing) about another $6-7000 to add to my student loan.

I couldn't even act surprised.

fuck pencils, fuck everything

That's bullshit. Have you got it in writing or in your contract or anywhere that they promised to pay for the entire thing? Are you in a position to negotiate?

No, the deal was always that they would pay for the course if there was money and it would depend on what else the budget was spent on each financial year, and we've had budget cuts, plus the earthquake, so there isn't any money anymore. I do understand it, and know that I'm lucky they'll still pay for this years courses (if I pass them) but after that I'm on my own (well, there's loans and parents and things).

It just sucks. I'll work something out. And at least this way I won't feel like I have to stay in this job because I own them anything. The job is pretty good, or, was pretty good, before the earthquake when we could work in the same city we lived in, and the building had breathing room. In the news building it's going to be really cramped, and there are people (well one jerk in particular) that I really don't want to be sharing cramped conditions with. So in a way, it does free me up a bit, just not financially.

Fair enough. I hope it works out then, and that finishing the course will help you find a job in a place that really values you.
