Don't know about free anti-virus software, but FWIW, my ex (the meganerd) recommended AdAware and SpyBot for spyware.

Thanks! Advise is always appreciated ;^)

(Though honestly, I have both of those on my computer and when I installed the Microsoft one [yes, Microsoft is still evil...and I hate myself for preferring one of their programs] it picked up a lot they hadn't caught. And I find it does a better job of keeping them from installing and warning of threats as well. Though that's just my personal experience. If you wanted to give it a try, check it out here)

Though thinking on it...my mother's computer is running spybot and ada-ware, but I don't know that I ever gave her AdAware, so I might try it, just in case it catches anything...though I don't think I've ever had the one running on my comp catch anything that Microsoft didn't.

Cool! I hadn't talked to T about this in maybe a year and a half, so updated info and suggestions are welcome.

BTW, I'm listening to Kane's "Sweet Carolina Rain" right now. Thanks again for sharing music and turning me on to some great stuff. :-)

You're welcome! I love that song ;^)

I should really check and see if AdAware has an updated version now too...it might be better now.

>>it was wondering which connection I'd like it to use out of four connections...only two of which I know as legitimate. Yeah.
ah, that's called a 'dialer' and is gonna cost you a shitload of money if you go online with one if their connections.

>>Is anyone beginning to get a gist of the problem?
*nods* what did she do to her anti-virus and anti-spyware program?

>>700+ infections for 22 separate spyware programs. 3 of which are (big shocker here, boys and girls) Trojans.
how long did she run internet without anti-virus and adAware? Jesus... 700? WOW!

>>Out of spite, I pulled the cord out of the modem, so not the computer cannot connect to the internet at all.
very good idea!

You have to reinstall windows on her computer. I don't think it's enough to get a new anti-virus. There is far more extensive damange if it still disconnect every few minues. And besides with all those toolbars and such installed, there is a a lot of junk in the registry that will slow down the computer the longer it runs.

But try: www.kaspersky.com

Thanks! I'll try out the one you recommended (kaspersky) when I get the chance ;^)

Don't know about re-installing windows (at least w/o deinstalling the old one)...if there're files in the registry that I can't ferret out, it could lead to just plain needing to reformat (sadly remembers my own last big virus two years ago). Although we've been talking about getting my mother a new computer for quite some time. But she doesn't want to lose all her emails in Outlook. All 6000+ of them. Because you know...she might come back and want to read them again some day. *rolls eyes*

ah, that's called a 'dialer' and is gonna cost you a shitload of money if you go online with one if their connections.Ah...so that's what it's called. Yes, I figured it must be something along those lines. I told my mom not to use it at all, even for the recognized connections ( ... )

>>if there're files in the registry that I can't ferret out, it could lead to just plain needing to reformat
eh sorry, that's what I meant.

>>the only way those programs are useful is if she bothers to run them once in a while. *le sigh*
yes you have to run them maunally sometime if you haven't defined them as a task. My anti-virus and adaware tuns ever 2 days. It'a set task in windows.

>>I'll definitely be checking out the antivirus program.
I really don't think it's going to be enough.
Does your mother have partitions on her computer where she could store her emails? And besides, 6000 emails, is her outlook runing a little slow maybe? Or say, the WHOLE computer??

Yep. Computer has been running slow since high school. My father and I both strongly suspect that said email collection may be a contributor ;^)

*shamefully admits I don't actually know how to partition a hard drive*

I'm chiming in on the 'adaware' love. It's a pretty great program.

I know that's what our school uses. I originally downloaded it on this computer and had it really screw my computer up (it kept shutting down) so I figured there was an incompatibility and went for an earlier version. Now I have it on my computer but don't really use it.

I should check to see if there is a new version out, and, if so, how it reacts with my computer.

Thanks! ;^)

Your Dad probably thinks that anti-virus software secretly gives you viruses...

No...my dad's fairly tech savvy.

He's also, however, cheap.

I recommend Trend Micro's PC-Cillin Internet Security, which offers a 30 day free trial to use. I ended up buying it and tossing out Norton. I think it's much, much better. It's found a lot of stuff that Norton passed over that I didn't realize was on my computer.

My dad sounds like your mom with the crap he ends up with on his computer. I spent a whole weekend once trying to clean a nasty bug out of there using every program I could get my hands on and the thing still came back.

Thanks! I'll check it out. Better than Norton maybe? Wow!

Yeah...poor things. *pets damaged computer* They get bad when they've been neglected.
