SMG preview...

Sarah Michelle Gellar's newest movies:

Revolver: A succesful young business woman starts having nightmares about a young woman who was murdered 25 years ago.

Hmm...sounds like it could be good, but *headdesk* for some reason these are the type of movies that usually spell bad luck for her and which make me say, "Why Sarah, why?"

I'm with you. She needs to quit doing genre, and do something mainstream. Yeah, yeah, I know all about Cruel Intentions and that weird movie where she was a chef. She did well in both of those. But she needs to make the jump into the next level.

Think: Reese Witherspoon vs. SMG. Why does RW get so many better parts? I don't think she's any better as an actress.

Some of you may have noted the recent dissing of SMG by her agent in the New Yorker (and his subsequent firing by a very annoyed SMG).... this just confirms my thought that she had not had very good representation. She deserves much better roles than she's been getting.

I don't think that a film being mainstream makes it better.

When SMG is interviewed she talks about actively choosing the roles she's taken because something about the role appealed to her and/or because she wanted to work with the director.

She also has strong criteria about what kind of roles she plays and portraying women not just as someone's wife, daughter or girlfriend.

I think she is conscious about the roles she chooses.

Thanks for your comment! I respectfully disagree. I don't think she's choosing to be a B movie actress. As of now, that's what she is.

You may both be right. She may be choosing roles for good reasons, but without the awareness of other factors which a good agent can bring to the table. How committed is the studio to promoting the film? How likely are the producers to override directorial decisions? Will the budget allow the director enough scope? Is the script finalised, or might some last minute hack job change her role? These are the sorts of things an agent can and should bring out. A good agent should warn her away from roles which look good in principle but are actually a snare for the unwary.

Southland Tales: A musical/comedy set in 2008 where a three-day heatwave in Los Angeles culminates in a huge Fourth of July party.

Have you seen 'Donnie Darko'? I'm not worried about this movie because I loved DD so much and I trust the writer/director to use SMG as a star in the flick and not an extra.

I guess it's the word "musical" that worries me the most...

No offense, um...I really loved her in OMWF, but I have trouble imagining her pulling off a musical on anything else.

Here's hoping I'm proved wrong.

I didn't mind 'The Grudge,' but it's not my cuppa, you know?

I don't know as Ms. Gellar sets the screen on fire, but she's a good actress and the parts she's had so far haven't displayed any rich veins of talent or craftsmanship. We can hope it's because of bad representation and with a different agent both her movies and her craft will improve.
