The Australian 2011 VW Kerfuffle

My family have been working for and driving VWs since the 1950s. We've been advocates for the company and proud owners. Until one member of the family bought a 2011 Golf. It conked out on the first test drive. We believed the stammering salesman when he said it wasn't a problem. More fool us and our faith in VW.... It ran rough from day one. It ( Read more... )

Well, there's a reason I drive a Mercedes these days...

For what it's worth, late model VWs seem to have real troubles with the electrical systems.

The gearboxes seem to be a root cause of issues too. Here it's all been about the engine stalls, but I can promise you it was the gearbox for the trip I took. I believe it's the same company that they used for the semi autos in the later '60s Beetles, which they called Saxomats. They worked fine if they were put together well, and then maintained well. Which they seldom were. I was witness to the removal of the last Saxomat gearbox in this State. The system was always rather dodgy and I was amazed that current Golfs use a later generation of the Saxomat which they call a dual clutchless automatic. That Golf was rather traumatic to drive, and I've driven a 1964 automatic Jaguar this week. Automatics from the '60s seem very rough. But that Golf was worse. It sounds like a classic "they don't make them like they used too" situation but there's something very wrong with those Golfs. I currently drive a 2011 Toyota Camry, and have a 1961 Karmann Ghia and a 1962 Beetle. All three drive better than that darn golf. Seriously. I worried more ( ... )
