Last weekend, I was bored and took a trip to the Lockington Locks, which are about 20 minutes away from my home.  These locks were used as part of the Miami-Erie canal system to rise a canal boat a total of 67 feet and was the highest point between Cincinnati and Toledo.  There were gates at either end of the lock and water was allowed in as the ( Read more... )

Very cool. One of my professors in college was an absolute Erie Canal nut (for which we teased her mercilessly). Those locks were an impressive engineering feat--how cool that you got to see them regardless of whether they were operational or not!

Thanks! They are really cool. I haven't visited this site since I was in high school, so it was fun to go back and take my time there. Locks really are impressive; I still don't fully understand how they work! ;)

Yeah, it is funny. There are parts of the town where the canal does still have the water in it.
