Physically speaking, I was so born in the wrong century!

I have thought the same thing about myself so many times. But, I do feel a little naive because Terry Pratchett is 100% unknown to me.

I didn't know anything about him until 2002 when I was living with three of his fans. He does sci-fi/fantasy satire. I've loved every one of the 12 or so I've read so far. There are four story-lines at this point: the City Guard who usually end up solving mysteries, the wizards - they work at Unseen University and the Librarian was turned into an orangutan by a freak magical occurrence and won't let them change him back; the witches; and Death and his family.

If you like the genre at all, give him a try. He hooked me when I was looking for a vampire book and found Carpe Jugulum - a great spoof on the classical vampire mythology. :-)

I've read a couple of Sam Grimes books, and I have Thief of Time from the library, but I haven't started it yet...

Thief of Time was great. A very sci-fi/kung-fu thing going on. :-) And Susan is very cool!
