I read a bunch of the Nightside books. I read Deathstalker a number of years ago. I thought Deathstalker had some really cool ideas and possibilities, but it seemed really vicious. Unnecessarily vicious. I'd have liked to keep reading to see where things went, but...

I'd say that's a fair interpretation of Green's non-urban fantasy work. He always defaults to the heroic fantasy tropes, which tend towards the brutal.
